On the 18th August 1487 Malaga was re-conquered by the catholic troops. Initially the Aljama mosque was converted into a cathedral. Soon the construction of a new cathedral was proposed on a north south axis. The main facade door was constructed in gothic style about 1510 and this is the sacristy door that today leads into the gardens.
The guide leads the party up one of the XVIII century tower staircase (where the bell ringer lived until thirty years ago) and onto a terrace before continuing up the XVI tower to the main roof. In the two stages you will climb 50m in 200 steps.

Málaga Palacio de Ferias y Congresos (FYCMA) is a conference centre situated to the west of Malaga city. The building itself is a modern architectural marvel, designed by Angel Asenjo, with a maritime theme. The roof represents waves with a giant fish swimming in them. Its mish-mash of colours, shapes and materials, including Guggenheim Bilbao-style metal pannelling, make it a spectacular sight. The building was commissioned, and is now run, by Málaga Town Hall.
Málaga University is the Institute of Higher Education in Málaga. It is a relatively modern university set on two campuses. It is one of the most popular Universities in Spain, and especially Andalucía, famous for its affiliation with the Andalucía Technology Park (PTA). As a relatively new establishment, it is constantly growing and improving.
3.000 years ago the Phoenicians landed in Málaga, they called it MALACA (probably from the word malac - to salt) and they used the harbour as an important centre for salting fish. They built the fortress overlooking Málaga - now replaced by the Alcazaba, the interesting archaeological museum housed in the Moorish Castle, beneath this fortress contains Phoenician pottery excavated from the fortress and nearby burial grounds.
