Jerez del Marquesado

Jerez del Marquesado is one of the highest municipalities of the entire Iberian Peninsula, a geographical feature that has converted it into the perfect place for civilisation settlements. In fact, there are even remains of the Neolithic Era, the Roman Period and, above all, Moorish. Its Arab influence can be seen nowadays in its streets, narrow and meandering, and in its balconies and squares, white and full of plant pots.

Torre de Alcázar

The earliest written references to a fortress in Jerez (al-Qasr Sened) date back to the 12th century. In 1125, Alfonso "El Batallador" arrived, causing great destruction to the nearby towns.

Minas de Constanza

The abandoned mines date back to the nineteenth century, as does the Regas mill, which is still in operation today.

History

The town's origins date back to prehistoric times, specifically the Argar culture, which left behind Neolithic remains. Bronze Age mining operations continued into Roman times.

Guadix

The cathedral town of Gaudix is well off the beaten path, in the eastern confines of the Province of Granada, a large, bustling country town with a personality all of its own. Its history dates back to Phoenician and Roman times, and it played a major role in the Reconquest. The most interesting feature of the Guadix area is that many of the inhabitants of this large town live underground, in the southern part of the town.

History

Although numerous palaeontological sites containing the fossilised remains of large Quaternary mammals have been discovered, two million years ago this territory was a veritable orchard.

Necrópolis Megalítica

A very extensive megalithic necropolis near the confluence of the Fardes and Guadix Rivers. These megaliths vary in shape and size, with approximately 15 tombs.

This is a cylindrical watchtower from the Moorish period, measuring 4.20 metres in diameter. It is constructed from large stones arranged in rows with thick lime mortar joints.
