Costa de la Luz

The southern villages

Nestled along Spain's Costa de la Luz, the coastal villages of Conil, Zahara, and Tarifa overlook the southern Atlantic Cadiz coast.

Conil de la Frontera has a maze of narrow, whitewashed streets, white sandy beaches, and stunning cliffs. Don´t miss its fresh fish and seafood.

Zahara de los Atunes is famed for its beach and of course the local tuna. This is still a working fishing village and has a charming, relaxed atmosphere. The sunsets over the Atlantic are a must!

Tarifa is Europe's windsurfing capital, its unique position, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, offers thrilling water sports. Come and explore it´s lively bohemian character.

Festivals in Andalucia

La Virgen del Carmen

The quintessential  summer festival

La Virgen del Carmen, as the patron saint of mariners and fishermen, is revered in many towns and villages along the Andalucian coast. Also known as “La Reina de los Mares”, during the festival celebrations the icon comes out of the church and is paraded around the streets. The procession makes its way down to the beach and if the weather permits, the Virgen goes out to sea with a flotilla of small boats.

The date of the celebrations vary from town to village around 16th July and each procession is slightly different with music, flowers and costumes honouring the local traditions.

Espeto

Discover the Espeto, tasty sardines cooked in the open air

The Espeto is a traditional way of preparing fresh fish, especially sardines. Six or seven fish are speared on a long wooden stick, an Espeto, and cooked over the embers of an open fire. With only a sprinkling of sea salt and lemon juice as seasoning, this is a delicious way to enjoy these healthy fish, rich in omega3.

During the summer months you can find traditional wooden boats filled with sand set up to grill Espetos, especially at restaurants or chiringuitos on the beach. It is a familiar sight on the Malaga and Granada coast throughout the summer season.

Why not try and make your own Espeto?  Check out our instructions here…
