Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción

The Parish Church of Our Lady of the Assumption was built between the 16th and 18th centuries and is considered one of the most interesting examples of Gothic-Mudéjar architecture in the province of Granada. Built on the site of a former mosque, the church consists of a main nave leading to a monumental proto-Baroque stone altarpiece designed by Ambrosio de Vico (Spanish mason and master builder) in 1614. This altarpiece is decorated with a painting by Pedro de Raxis and features an octagonal dome with Mudejar coffered ceilings. On either side, there are two small chapels: on the right is the baptismal chapel, while the one on the left supports the three-body bell tower, decorated with tiles. Other notable features include the painting entitled ‘Christ served by the angels’, attributed to the Spanish painter, Don Pedro A Bocanegra, and the main and side doors, characterised by a pronounced Mannerist style. The church has been declared a Site of Cultural Interest. Located on Calle Real.
