Archaeological site of El Malagón
The archaeological site of El Malagón is located on the Chirivel plateau, on a gentle elevation in the municipality of Cúllar in the province of Granada. It is a Copper Age settlement belonging to the group of Los Millares and is dated between 2565 and 2200 BC.
The site is composed of several circular-plan huts made with stone bases and mud walls. The settlement was protected by a wall and a circular fort located at the top of the hill. Archaeologists have found remains that indicate that the reduction and smelting of copper ore was a key activity in the community. At the foot of the town there is an outcrop of malachite. The settlement also contains numerous graves of various sizes, with circular or irregular plans, that are mostly outside the huts.
The site is located 100m northwest of Cortijo El Malagón. There is a public spring and water trough at the cortijo.
