History
Like the rest of the region, Ítrabo saw the passage of ancient civilisations such as the Phoenicians, who arrived in the area as traders. We find some first historical references in Andalusian texts from the twelfth century, specifically by the authors Al-Idrisi and Ibu Gayr, placing Ítrabo in one of the Almuñécar farmhouses.
The village further developed following the arrival of Muslim populations, who knew how to take advantage of their agricultural resources and the possibilities for new crops such as vines. After a time of hostilities with the Christian forces, the reconquest led to a certain social instability that culminated in the expulsion of the Moors and widespread depopulation in the sixteenth century. Later it suffered frequent incursions by Barbary pirates and in the second half of the twentieth century it took off economically, thanks to the development of tropical crops and tourism.
When the Christians entered Ítrabo after the capture of Granada by the Catholic Monarchs, the place was a farmhouse with a population of 50 residents, depending on the Alfoz of Almunécar. The farm was known as Aydrabu, located at the extreme end of the Sexitano district, near the land of Salobreña, in the middle of a valley, among irrigated crops. Only after the expulsion of the Moors from Granada was it repopulated with Christians.
Things to see
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Carmen
The date of construction of the church is not known with certainty because its archives were destroyed or lost during the revolts of the Spanish Civil War, however it is estimated to date from between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries due to its Neoclassical style and notable proportions. It is made up of a floor plan that contains two entrances, one on the main façade and the other that faces the sacristy. It has a large nave that is covered by a barrel vault ceiling with lunettes, and on the outside the stature of its robust bell tower stands out, made of exposed brick. Located on Calle Iglesia.
Lavadero de la Carmeta
An old spring with a public laundry area which is still used as a meeting place for residents. Located on Calle Jose Martin Recuerda.
THINGS TO SEE OUTSIDE THE TOWN
Ermita de Nuestra Señora Virgen de la Salud
The first references to this chapel date back to the middle of the eighteenth century. According to the village priest, the chapel was composed of a hermitage, two houses, one for the priest and another for those who made a pilgrimage to the sanctuary. With very simple architectural lines, the exterior highlights the white colour of the construction and the smooth walls with little ornamentation. According to tradition, the statue of the Virgin, much adored by the townsfolk, appeared above a spring near the sanctuary. Located north of the town, off Carretera La Era.
Molino de Harina y Aceite
The flour and oil mill is an interesting structure of Mudejar typology containing two rooms, each with their own access. The first corresponds to an oil mill that has a rectangular nave with two chapels to house screw presses, open on one of its long sides. At the opposite end is the mill stone, and on the other larger side, the ceramic vessels for the oil and the boiler to heat the water used in the pressing process. The oil mill is preceded by a yard for unloading the olives. Located east of the town on Cuesta Rio.
KITTY HARRI GARDEN MUSEUM
The Kitty Harri Garden Museum looks over the beautiful Valle Tropical offering magnificent views, both of the mountain ranges of Almijara and Cazulas, and the Mediterranean Sea. The gardens are continuously evolving and have a great number of palm trees, shrubs and trees from all over the world. This lush tropical garden is home to an exhibition of more than 150 sculptures by some 15 international artists. About half of the sculptures are works by Kitty Harri (an internationally renowned writer under the name of Kitty Sewell) and the rest are donations or are on loan from other renowned artists. A Sunday visit includes a glass of wine and nibbles, and there is always classical Baroque chamber music to accompany your visit, played by Nick on his harpsichord (cembalo) together with visiting string and wind instrument musicians.
