Antigua Universidad e Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista

Antigua Universidad e Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista

This piece of civil architecture is a great representative of the city’s mannerism, carried out by order of the Administrator and Priest Pedro Fernandez de Córdoba on the site of the Franciscan Convento de San León , ceded in 1571. The works were completed in 1593, except for the façade and Capilla Mayor , which were completed in the seventeenth century.

The definitive transfer of the University to this building took place in 1595. In 1609, through a Royal Provision of Felipe III , the statutes were approved. In 1630, Felipe IV, at the request of the University of Baeza, prevented the materialization of the one in Jaén. In 1667, by Real Certificate, the twinning between the Universities of Baeza and Salamanca took place. From this moment on, Latin and primary education classes were taught in the building; later, it was a college of humanities and state school and, from 1875, it was a Secondary School.

Starting in 1979, the building was again linked to university education, housing the Headquarters of the “Antonio Machado” Summer University, until its transfer in 1992, which became the Seminary and the Palacio de Jabalquinto. The replica classroom stands out, in which the poet Antonio Machado taught French grammar. In its well-stocked library are the foundational and confirmatory bulls and a historical archive. The Iglesia de San Juan Evangelista was the chapel of the old University.
