Municipal Museum of Antequera

Municipal Museum of Antequera

The Municipal Museum of Antequera houses artefacts tracing Antequera's archaeological history, many dating back to Roman times, as well as baroque and contemporary art.

The museum opened officially in 1972, after a group of local citizens discovered a bronze sculpture named 'The Ephebe of Antequera' (ephebe denoting an young man in ancient Greece who has just reached manhood or citizen status), measuring 1.54 metres, thought to date back to the first century AD. This piece is still considered the highlight of the museum's exhibits, and the finest archaeological find in the Iberian Peninsula according to some.

The hugely varied collection is spread across 5000m2 of the Palacio de Nájera. The exhibitions focus on explaining Antequera's history to visitors, through a mixture of archaeological, ethnographical and artistic pieces.

Visitors can see Roman sculptural relics, as well as Megalithic and Chalcolithic artefacts, and silverwork from the 15th-18th centuries. Early Modern ornaments and textiles tell the rich religious history of the area.

A fine arts section houses baroque painting and sculpture, as well as paintings by Antonio Mohedano (1561-1625), himself a vecino (resident) of Antequera. as well as 17 paintings by local contemporary painter Cristóbal Toral (1940 - ).

The museum also aims to incorporate modern technologies: its 360° Immersion Room allows visitors to virtually experience the Correr las Vegas ('Running in Front of the Thrones') festival in the Antequera Holy Week.

The Palace which houses the museum is itself of artistic interest; dating from the 18th century, its cut-brick tower, cloistered patio and elaborate staircase are fine examples of Andalusian Baroque architecture.

As well as its permanent exhibitions, the Municipal Museum offers regular workshops and cultural events.
