Paseo de los Tristes

This elongated plaza on the river bank is known to all as the Paseo de los Tristes, the "road of the grieving", because, before the advent of the automobile, the granadinos carried their dead along it and up the Alhambra hill to the cemetery. But the official name is the Paseo del Padre Manjón, for the priest who founded the school for poor children in the nearby Sacromonte, and whose bust stands among the shade trees and café tables.
