El Colorado, Conil de la Frontera

El Colorado is a small village to the north of Conil de la Frontera, situated on the N-340 coastal road. Since the construction of the A-48 motorway, heavy traffic has bypassed the village which has benefited and developed its own identity. Administratively El Colorado is a pedania (dependency) of Conil.

Comes provide a daily bus service M-912 from Cadiz city (departing 11.00), San Fernando, Chiclana, San Andres golf, El Colorado to Conil de la Frontera, continuing on to Vejer, La Barca de Vejer, Barbate, Zahara de las Atunes and Atlanterra. Return service at 08.15 and 18.45. Aditionally there are six services a day between Conil and Atlanterra.

There is no shortage of accommodation options in Conil de la Frontera, given that it is one of the more popular holiday destinations on the Costa de la Luz, ranging from self-catering villas and apartments to hotels and hostels. The vast majority of hotels in Conil have direct access to the beach and views to the sea. There is everything from small, budget hotels to big, resort-style beach hotels, and everything in between.

Hostals & Hostels in Conil de la Frontera

Most hostals and hostels are located in the centre of this pueblo blanco (white village/town) town whereas apartments occupy the paseos lining the beaches. This doesn't mean to say that staying in the town's heart will jeopordise your beach holiday, quite the opposite. In Conil, whether staying in the old town or in primer linea (first line) you will most likely not be far from the stunning beach.

Almadraba Tuna

Every year in May, after the first full moon, fishermen from towns on the Cadiz part of the Costa de la Luz, including Barbate, Zahara de los Atunes, Conil de la Frontera, and Tarifa, set up a complicated labyrinth of nets off the Atlantic coast, called the almadraba, to catch blue-fin tuna. This is a major social and gastronomic event, providing essential (if seasonal) work for fishermen, packing factories, restaurants along the coast.

Conil Bus Services

Conil de la Frontera's bus station was officially opened on the 7th of November 2016. It's construction was overseen and carried out by the Junta de Andalucía ( Andalusian regional government) and the town hall in Conil, with an investment of 1.18 million euros. The station is conveniently located on Avenida Cañada Honda (Av. Cañada Honda.

Surfing at Conil de la Frontera

Playa Los Bateles is a continuation from the southern part of La Fontanilla and is the main emblamatic urban beach for Conil. Thanks to fairly strong winds here it is also popular with wind surfers partly because of the convenient car park.

Cadiz City Train Station

Cadiz train station is located off Plaza de Sevilla on the eastern or bay side of the city near the port. The old station building is located behind the Aduana (customs) building and the trains depart from the new station building with is behind the old.

Vias Verdes

Spain´s Vías Verdes (railway paths) are one of Andalucia´s lesser known rural attractions and a great way to discover the countryside off the sometimes well-beaten track. In the 1960s the Spanish government drastically reduced its regional railway routes and closed down many train lines. Since the early 1990s, the government has been transforming these former railway lines into over 100 routes nationwide

Writers, Poets and Philosophers

Andalucia has been home to world-famous writers, poets and philosophers during the course of history, including the poet, playwright and theatre director Federico Garcia Lorca. Listed below are a number of famous writers and poets who have roots in Andalucia.

Metropol Parasol

Known locally as Las Setas (the Mushrooms), due to its short stems and wide caps, this is the most ambitious, expensive and controversial urban project in Seville since Expo 92. Opened in 2011, and designed by German architect Jurgen Meyer H, it is now one of Seville's architectural icons, along with the Giralda, Torre del Oro, Plaza de España, and the Alamillo bridge.

George Campbell

The artist has a roundabout (Glorieta Jorge Campbell) named after him in Malaga, on AvenidaCerrado Calderon, at the junction with Calle Flamenco and CalleAndaluz. Campbell was born in Arklow, County Wicklow in 1917. He went to school in Dublin, and then moved to Belfast, where met his wife Margaret, known as Madge.

Dani La Rue

One of Britain's most adored female impersonators, and certainly one of the highest paid entertainers of his era, Dani La Rue, once owned a luxurious apartment in the Alkaid complex in the Lomo de Los Riscos district of Torremolinos. A Steinbach grand piano, complete with crystal chandelier, took centre stage in the apartment, which he shared with his long-time lover.

Gerald Brennan

Gerald Brennan, who lived for many years in Churriana, gave English lessons to Spanish children in a class room above an old house in the Plaza Costa del Sol during the late 1950s. Some of the older residents of the town remember Brennan as a rather eccentric Englishman whom the villagers found 'peculiar'.

Hotel Reina Cristina

The proudest hotel in the city of Algeciras is the Hotel Reina Cristina. Kings and Queens have stayed there. So have statesmen such as Churchill and Roosevelt and film stars like Rock Hudson and Deborah Kerr. Hotel Reina Cristina was opened in 1901 and the building includes ancient ruins. There are parts of an 8th-Century Mosque and a Moorish well. The hotel is next to Algeciras Port. The beach is 10 minutes drive away.

Paco de Lucía

Genius, maestro, virtuoso, even God, are all words that have been used to describe one of the most idolised guitarists in the history of flamenco. His real name was Francisco Sánchez Gómez, and as John Lennon would be to classic pop lovers or Pavarotti to classical music fans so was Paco de Lucía to followers of flamenco guitar.
