Family Hotels

Muslim

The horseshoe arch, first seen in small churches erected by the Visigoths, was developed by the Moors and became the hallmark of their architecture; the Grand Mosque in Córdoba being the classic and most well known example. Other design characteristics brought from Syria by the Umayyads in the 8th century were plant motifs and decorative inscriptions of calligraphy running horizontally across walls or around doorways.

Paloma Romero - aka Palmolive Punk Musician

From its inception, the punk movement rebelled against the status quo. Paloma Romero (aka Palmolive, member of the Slits and the Raincoats) found that this anarchical musical genre was the perfect means for criticising injustice. Whether this was the fascist regime of General Franco in her native Spain or the misogyny of London in the 1970s, Palmolive found plenty to criticize.

Speed Limits in Spain

Lookout for specific speed limits. These will be signed but if you are driving across country you may forget the specific limit applies. Tunnels and underpass even on motorways will be limited to 80 or 100 km/h. Sharp bends will be signed, cross country roads passing through villages will be 50km/hr or road intersections 80km/hr.

Roadside Hotels (Motels)

These hotels are located close to a motorway or a major road, and are ideal for anyone undertaking a long car journey across Andalucia, perhaps to discover the lesser-known parts of the region. They offer a convenient place to stay without having to make a detour onto a smaller road to find a hotel after a long day’s driving, although the downside is that they are functional rather than beautiful and full of character.

Jaen City - Fascenating Fact 1

Jaen´s name comes from the Moorish word geen or jayyan, meaning stopping post on a caravan route. King Ferdinand III captured the city from Ibn-Nasr, who subsequently founded the Nasrid kingdom of Granada in 1246, and Jaen had a strategic position on the frontline between Christian Spain and Moorish Granada. It was used as the gateway for the armies in the Reconquest, and Ferdinand and Isabella launched their final assault on Boabdil´s Granada from here in 1492.

Gonzalez Byass

Their most famous sherry, Tio Pepe (you´ll recognise the logo, a bottle with a red hat and jacket, and a guitar), gives its name to these bodegas. The company dates from 1835, which makes it one of the newer of the great sherry dynasties in Jerez.

Info Centres

In the western part of the park is El Dornajo, at Km 23 on the A395 road, 958 340 625. It has loads of information on the park, including an exhibition on the area's flora and fauna, hiking, where to stay, horse riding, cycle hire and paragliding. The centre sells guidebooks and maps on the park, some of which are available in English, and there is a shop selling locally produced cheese, ham and wine.

El Padron - Estepona districts

East of Punto Plata, visitors will enjoy a visit to the Padrón district. This low-density area showcases the benefits of the Andalucían Mediterranean coastline, offering visitors and residents the choice of a relaxing beach, beach clubs, and restaurants alongside the coastal  walkway to explore  the area.

Things to See in Puerto Banus

Puerto Banús marina is without doubt the main sight of this town. With space for over 900 boats, this is where the rich and famous, including the King of Saudi Arabia, moor their impressive yachts. Many of these boats don't leave the marina and are simply used as 'holiday homes'. Along the marina you will also see plenty of luxury sports cars being driven, or simply paraded, by their owners alongside the numerous designer boutiques.

English Cemetery in Malaga

The English Cemetery lies on a hillside very near the historic centre of Malaga. More than 1000 people are buried within its 8,000 square metres; the majority, including its founder, are British but there are also Spanish and Americans, Danes and Swedes among other nationalities.

Laguna Honda Natural Reserve

Located near the Laguna del Chinche Natural Reserve is the 65ha saltwater Laguna Honda, with an additional 220ha area around the lake shores. It usually dries up in summer, so it's best to visit it at other times of the year.

Access
The reserve is located about 48km southwest of Jaen. Take the A316 from Jaen towards Martos. At the village of Alcaudete take the N432 towards Cordoba. A few kilometres out of the village, just north of the N432, is the reserve.

Sunday trading in Andalucia

Traditionally, very few shops used to open on a Sunday or public holiday in Andalucia. This was due to restrictions on Sunday trading by the regional government. However, since 2020, the number of Sundays when shopping centres and large supermarkets are permitted to open has increased substantially.
