Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza

The chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza was built by Franciscan friars in the sixteenth century to encourage Marian devotion and veneration among the local population. Although the chapel itself has little architectural value, it contains several valuable works of art.

These include a carving of the Virgin, an altarpiece and a fresco on the dome, painted by an artist from the Granada school of the time. The complete collection of paintings depicting the life and miracles of San Francisco de Asís, founder of the Franciscan order, is also noteworthy.

The famous bullfighter Frascuelo, who was from Churriana, helped fund the construction of the chapel’s bell tower. The chapel is located in Plaza de la Ermita.
