Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Visitación

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Visitación

Like other parish churches in Granada city and province, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Visitación was commissioned by the Catholic Monarchs for Christian worship after the Conquest of Granada in 1492. It has a central nave covered with a Moorish tiled roof, and its interior features a Mudéjar-style roof structure.

The high altar, raised on slightly higher steps and flooring, is covered by a dome that was once adorned with polychrome frescoes of celestial figures. The bell tower stands next to the main entrance at the north-west end of the building. Its bells continue to summon parishioners to religious services, as they did in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, although they are now electromechanical.

In 1967, a severe storm flooded the nave and caused the floor to sink by about 30 cm in an area that had previously been filled in. Major restoration works followed, covering the floor, baseboards, altars, walls, naves, chapels, beams, coffered ceilings, doors, façades and bell tower. The works were completed on 18 June 1973. The church is located in Plaza de la Iglesia.
