ESTEPONA MURALs - Madre Amorosa and La Mirada de un Niño

By Marianne Hill

‘Madre Amorosa' (Loving Mother) and ‘La Mirada de un Niño' (The Eyes of a Child) are both by Francisco Alarcon and are located on Calle Terraza in Barriada Primavera. The murals are on two walls which are next to each other and were created in July 2013. Tones of grey, white and black have been used on both and it was the artist's intention to honour the mother figure on one side and to highlight the importance of learning, personal development and creativity in children on the other.

‘Loving Mother’ was inspired by a piece of writing I dedicated to the artist Francisco Alarcon's mother and grandmother, in honour of the love and hard work they give to my family every day. The painting is also dedicated to children, to show them the value of mothers' daily work and of simple things, like the humble yet nourishing lentil dish that the girl in the painting eats. These paintings celebrate the bond between mothers and children.

The mural ‘A Child's Eye’ celebrates creativity and the importance of artistic expression in a child's personal development. Art connects children with their emotions and teaches them values such as respect, effort, and teamwork. Creativity enables them to develop a critical mindset and become free thinkers.

Grisaille is an old technique used by 14th-century sculptors to create the realistic effect of volume and a colour similar to stone.

The paintings were inaugurated in July 2013. To celebrate, the artist Francisco Alarcon held a workshop for children in the square next to the murals.
