Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua

Iglesia de San Antonio de Padua

There is no evidence to suggest that there was a small oratory in Lugros during the Muslim era. Nor is there any evidence of the construction of a small church after the reconquest. However, at the beginning of the sixteenth century, a chapel was built on the site of an old blacksmith's shop to provide Christian services for local workers. In 1603, at the residents' request, the Marquis arranged for the construction of a larger chapel.

Construction of the current Lugros church began on 9 April 1702 with Pedro de Palacio's approval, according to records in the Guadix-Baza Bishopric archives. On 11 March 1748, the farmers and residents of Lugros asked a priest to come to the church to administer the sacraments and teach Christian doctrine. Bishop Miguel de San José intervened in this matter and reached some agreements or rules with the Marquis of Lugros.

These agreements led to the establishment of the Parish of Lugros in 1753, with Manuel Ochoa appointed as the first priest by the Marquis after he approached the bishop and provost, Juan Antonio de Ferrer Varacalde. The church is located on Calle Real.
