By Katie O'Neill
Baked apples make an excellent dessert for many occasions due to their versatility, health benefits, and comforting flavor. Naturally sweet, they require little to no added sugar, making them a wholesome option. Apples are readily available year around in Andalucia and are reasonable in price. You can easily customise this recipe with various fillings like nuts, raisins, cinnamon, or caramel, catering to different tastes. Their warm, spiced aroma evokes feelings of home baking, making them perfect for family gatherings or social gatherings. Additionally, baked apples are simple to prepare and suitable for gluten-free and vegan diets, ensuring they can be enjoyed by guests with dietary restrictions without compromising on flavour.
Baked Apples
Ingredients:
- 6 baking apples (golden delicious work fine)
- 6 teaspoons sugar
- 6 teaspoons butter
Method:
Wash and dry the apples. Using a small sharp knife, cut out the tough inner core and the stem, but try not to pierce all the way through to the bottom. Fill the cavity in each apple with a bit of butter and sugar, place in a shallow baking dish and bake for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, or until tender.
Serve warm alone or with some plain un whipped cream drizzled over. Serves six.
Note: The apples can also be filled with raisins soaked in brandy for a more elegant dessert.
