Trans Sahara Rally

Following the success of previous year trips andalucia.com reports on Stage One of the 2007 Rally. The rally consist of a number of old 4x4 vehicles making the one way journey from Andalucia, Andalucia to Cape town in South Africa. The rally will take the form of four stages.

Paris - Dakar Rally

Since its inception in 1978 most annual editions of the 'Paris Dakar Rally' began in Paris and crossed Andalucia to North Africa en Route to Dakar in Sengal. Some years the start location was changed from Paris. In 1995 and 1996 the start was in Granada.

Cabra's Gypsy Pilgrimage

The “Romería Nacional de los Gitanos”, or National Gypsy Pilgrimage” traditionally takes place the third Sunday in June and attracts not only gypsies, but also “gachos” (non-gypsies). In fact, this event which was founded in 1969 by Jose Córdoba Reyes, draws participants from across Andalucia.

Hotels in Sanlúcar de Barrameda

As popular for its historic and cultural heritage as for its beautiful beaches, Sanlúcar experiences a huge influx of tourism all year round, especially during the summer period. To accommodate these people, there are a number of hotels in the town and on the beach, ranging from luxury, resort-style hotels with swimming pools and access to the beach, to smaller hotels with a bit more character. 

Hotels in Algeciras

Primarily an industrial port town, Algeciras is always busy with people passing in and out of it. There are numerous luxury hotels, namely the Hotel Reina Cristina, as well as a number of smaller, cheap hotels - perfect for an overnight stay. 

San Martin del Tesorillo

This white village is famous for its orange groves and its emblematic half-moon-shaped, steel truss-girder bridge which spans the river Guadario as it flows down to the Mediterranean. San Martín del Tesorillo is 22km south-east of Jimena de la Frontera, in the Campo de Gibraltar, right on the border between Cadiz and Malaga provinces. It became a 'entidad local' (sub-district) of Jimena in 1999.

Gibraltar - Rock Hotel

This magnificent landmark hotel is situated on the Rock of Gibraltar, and has stunning views. Built in 1932, it is decorated in a colonial style, and its famous past guests include Sir Winston Churchill.

Rooms at Rock Hotel come with satellite TV and facilities for making tea and coffee. Each also has its own bathroom, and a balcony with views of the sea.

San José del Valle

The village of San José del Valle lies to the east of the main road linking Paterna de Rivera and Arcos de la Frontera, not far from the large Guadalacatín reservoir. It is surrounded by lush undulating countryside which rises gently to the east into the foothills of the Sierra de Cádiz.

Prado del Rey

A town located in the Sierra of Cadiz, part of the white town route and whose municipality boundaries stretch into the National Parks of Alcornocales and Grazalema. Around 4km from the town, located at the highest point of what is known as la Cabeza de Hortales, you'll find an important historical legacy - the Roman city of Iptuci.

Espera

This town in the Sierra de Cadiz, near Arcos de la Fontera, is part of the Ruta de Pueblos Blancos (the White Towns Route). It has its own 400-hectare nature reserve - the Reserva Natural del Complejo Endorréico de Espera is made up of three lakes, and is famous for its abundance of rare waterfowl - specifically, coots and ducks.

Paterna de Rivera

Sitting in the centre of the province of Cadiz, Paterna de Rivera is at the crossroads of the Ruta del Toro. Connecting Medina Sidonia to the south-west with Alcalá de los Gazules to the east, and Jerez de la Frontera to the north with Los Barrios to the south, this ‘route of the bulls’ runs through some of the most beautiful undulating countryside of Andalucia.

El Gastor

The village of El Gastor is just off the main road north-west from Ronda to Algodonales and a few kilometres from Zahara de la Sierra. It is also known as the ‘Balcony of the White Villages’ because from the two mountain peaks in its municipality, El Algarín and Las Grajas, there are magnificent views of other little villages in the area and the surrounding countryside.

Alcalá de los Gazules

Alcalá de los Gazules is a spectacularly located historic hilltop pueblo blanco (white town) with stunning architecture. The town is situated in the middle of Cadiz province on the A-381 road from Los Barrios to Jerez. This road is often called "La Ruta del Toro" (Route of the Bull) for the bull-breeding ranches in the vicinity. With a population of about 6,000, Alcala is worth the short detour for a visit.
