Oria

The shrine is well worth the visit and can be reached by climbing the vertiginous zig-zag path from the main square near the Pilar Alto Fountain. If it is a hot day, take some water along for the climb.

Huécija is a typical alpujarreño village with notable features including the Convento de los Agustinos and its beautiful tower. It has about 480 inhabitants. The origin of the village’s name is not known with any certainty, however, it is thought to be either Latin or Arabic. During the Arab-Andalusi period, the town was called Guacimora, Güecixa and Güecija.

HISTORY

There are numerous remains that confirm this area has been populated since prehistoric times. The discovery of copper deposits at almost ground level led to the settlement of the Argar culture in the area.
