Alcolea

Alcolea’s name originates from the Arabic for ‘small castle’, which likely signals the village’s early structural origins. Rio Tinto Mines

Arising out of the midst of the surrounding greenery, the giant opencast mines of Rio Tinto create a surreal, almost lunar landscape. The removal of layer upon layer of soil and rock, in the search for iron ore, copper, silver and a host of other mineral ores, has tinted this part of the world in hues of dusty pink, brown, yellow, red and grey.

History of Ohanes

The first evidence of human presence in the area dates back to the Neolithic era, in the so-called Culture of the Caves, where the Nieles and Almecena caves particularly stand out. Ceramic and imprint remains from the fifth millennium BC have been discovered. The Argar Culture and the progressive Iberian, Phoenician and Carthaginian hordes gave way to Roman domination.

Uleila del Campo

Ayamonte

Ayamonte is situated on the estuary of the Río Guadiana, second longest river in Andalucia. Ayamonte's development has been inextricably linked to its position on the border with Portugal and has more foreign tourists than other locations on the Costa de la Luz, partly due to its proximity to the Algarve and its position far west on the Andalusian coast. It has about 19, 600 inhabitants.

Alcaidesa Heathland Golf Course

To complement the original links course, Heathland is another spectacular option for players at Alcaidesa. Designed by Dave Thomas and opened in 2007, it has wide open fairways and is reasonably flat all the way round, apart from the 11th which is laid out over differing levels.

Bujalance

Bujalance is home to the tallest tower in the province, a 55m watchtower which forms part of the Muslim fortress which is its main tourist attraction. The town has around 7500 inhabitants.

Hospital de los Venerables

Located in Barrio Santa Cruz, in a pretty square with orange trees, the 17th-century baroque hospital was built to care for elderly, impoverished and infirm priests. From 2027, it will be used as a gallery for religious art, and offers a peaceful haven in this area which is often thronged with visitors.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación

The church’s construction began in 1500 on the site of a former mosque, although an inscription on its exterior façade reveals that the work continued for several years, until 1634.

La Calahorra

Looming over the village of La Calahorra and the plateau of the Marquesado in the northern foothills of the Sierra Nevada is one of Andalucia's most emblematic and unusual fortresses, the haunting Castillo de La Calahorra. One of the first Italian Renaissance castles outside Italy and the first in Andalucia displaying these architectural features.
