Carlos Cano

The well-known Spanish singer, Carlos Cano died in December, 2000 aged just 54. Cano was born in Granada in 1946 and is regarded as the most popular representative of true Andalucian music. He was also the creator of a new type of popular "copla", a genre that has its roots in folklore and reflects the social problems of the south.

Cámaron de la Isla

Supposedly the greatest flamenco singer ever, Camarón de la Isla was considered to be the gypsy god of flamenco and his effigy is respected in a somewhat religious manner. This legendary great of flamenco history had the kind of image that the younger generation could associate with, a young gypsy rebel who was the first flamenco of rock star status.

Antonio Gades

Antonio Gades was one of the most revolutionary Spanish dancers of the twentieth century and he was also one of the most revered figures in the history of flamenco dance. Antonio Esteve Ródenas was born on the 14th November 1936 in Elda, Alicante, but went to live in Madrid at an early age. He was born of non-gypsy parents and spent his early years working in numerous jobs.

Antonio El Pipa

Antonio Ruiz Fernandezwas born into one of the large flamenco dynasties of Jerez de la Frontera in 1970; he is the grandson of Tia Juana la del Pipa, and son of Antonio el Pipa, both renowned flamenco dancers from the Santiago district of Jerez.

Antonio Canales

Antonio Gomez de los Reyes was born into a family of flamenco performers in Seville in 1961. (His grandfather “Canales” was a respected flamenco singer, although not professional). He was born in the heart of Triana, surrounded by the magical flamenco atmosphere that this old area of Seville once had.
