The Marbella International Film Festival has been held annually since 2006. It is traditionally held for a week in mid-September and provides a venue for encouraging artists from all parts of the world.

The Marbella International Film Festival brings together artists and their films in English and Spanish to display their talents to the commercial world. The Festival has expanded considerably since it’s launch and has the collaboration and association with the Marbella Town Hall and Tourist Board, Marbella Film Office and the Andalucia Film Commission.

The film categories featured are Separated into Shorts, Features, Documentaries and Animations. There are up to 1.000 aplications from Europe, Canada, the Americas, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Each year about 30 films in total are selected for presentation.

The Festival comprises of five evening events with associated industry networking opportunities, inspirational workshops including a presentation by the Marbella Films Commissions, a Director’s Q & A, and a Producer’s master class. Each year there is a Gala Awards Ceremony.

The festival was founded and continues to be organised by the New World Trust, a non-profit organization whose objective is to provide start-up capital for independent art projects and to offer hands on commercial support. 

The festival grows each year and is primarily a industry 'trade' event for artists, directors and producers to meet and network. However the film fans and the general public are welcome to attent the screenings.

2023 edition

In 2023 the Marbella International Film festival events were held at the Hard Rock Hotel 4th and 8th October 2022 with the screenings at Red Dog Cinema, Avenida Julio Iglesias, Puerto Banus. The official festival after party was held at a different venue each evening; Joy's Club, Lalala, Nomad, Tibu and Melia Banus Hotel.

Winner of the Best Feature and Best Director was Rise of the Footsoldier: Vengance bu UK director Nick Nevem. TATE goes on a rampage to avenge his loyal and trusted foot soldier's violent death. To track down the villain responsible, TATE ventures beyond his comfort zone of Essex and into the dark side of 90s Soho.

2022 edition

In 2022 the Marbella International Film festival events were held at the newly opened Hard Rock Hotel 5th and 9th October 2022 with the screenings at Red Dog Cinema, Avenida Julio Iglesias, Puerto Banus.

In 2022 of note was the film 'Bless Me Father' a 2022 USA Crime thriller by actor / director Gianni McLaughlin. Gianni made his 2017 acting debut in the award winning series "Peaky Blinders." He played an Italian American assassin for Adrien Brody's gang. Gianni explained that in 2020 he was due to marry his fiancée in Marbella. The wedding was cancelled due to Covid and his wife suggested the money be spent on his film project. The Marbella premier is fitting. Synopsis: A man confesses his sins adn unveils the ugly truth of his life; he is killing for the same man that killed his father. Will Vinny choose his fate or accept his destiny?

Franky Lankester and Actor and producer from Marbella is screening 'Room 4D' which is filmed in Marbella. The Mayor once asked him why all films shot in Marbella seem to be crime thrillers? Frankie has made a 2022 Psycological thriller called Room 4D. Synopsis: Dr Charlotte Goettling is in a race against time. Left to die, wounded and alone in an apartment building about to be demolished. She only has her own reasearch and her self-determinations to help her.

2021 edition

In previous years the festival was at Cines Teatro Goya, Avenida Julio Iglesias, Puerto Banus being the location to screen the global collection of films while the Festival Village was located between the cinema and Marina Banus featuring live entertainment from local artists. Workshops and Gala dinner were usually held at H10 Andalucia Plaza Hotel with the afterparty at Bliss nightclub.

2021 marked the 16th edition which was between 8th and 12th September 2021. 

There were about thirty films screened in three categories: shorts, features and documentaries.  

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, the nominations and winners of the 2020 festival were showcased as part of the 2021 festival.  

2020 edition

MIFF’s decision to conduct the 2020 festival online attracted huge international audiences, who enjoyed and voted for the outstanding films selected for the 2020 competition.
