Juviles

Juviles is a small village situated among chestnut forests in the highest region of the Alpujarra. It has links to the past and an air of tranquility. The village centre is characterised by narrow, steep streets and whitewashed houses with flat, slate roofs in the typical Alpujarreño style. It has a population of around 180.

History

The earliest recorded information about Juviles dates back to the beginning of the Hispano-Muslim era in the eighth century, as evidenced by the fortress (El Fuerte de Juviles) dating from that period. Its location was chosen for strategic reasons, and in times of difficulty it protected the neighbouring towns. More>

Iglesia de San Sebastián

The church was built in the sixteenth century, between 1555 and 1557, on the site of an orchard. The parish of Juviles was established in 1501, initially depending on that of Nieles. More>

Ermita de las Ánimas

This is a small, square chapel built of plastered masonry with a flat roof of launa and flagstone eaves. A railing surrounds the front, and two cypress trees stand on either side of the chapel. It is located on Calle Carretera.

NATURAL AREAS

If you’re visiting Juviles, be sure not to miss the Pisada del Gigante, located on the outskirts of the village. This limestone wall has been naturally eroded to resemble a huge footprint surrounded by aromatic plants.

Visitors can also enjoy the various hiking routes ideal for nature lovers: towards Trévelez, El Prado Alto, El Fuerte and El Barrio Bajo.
