Torreperogil is a destination of special interest for those who wish to practice wine tourism in Jaén being one of the few towns in the province that produce wines of recognised quality. It has about 7,200 inhabitants.

History

The name Torreperogil originates from the Lord of the Tower around which the town was built, Pero Xil de Zatico. This gentleman was an example of the powerful Castilian Knights who settled in the towns of Loma de Úbeda. Don Pero Xil distinguished himself in the conquest of Úbeda under the command of Fernando III in 1231. More>

Things to see

Torres Oscuras
Don Pero Xil established a castle here in the thirteenth century, around which the town was built. In the late nineteenth century, four towers remained of the castle complex, but today just two remain; one is the so-called Torreón Cuadrado and the other is known as the Torre Ochavada. These two towers are the most traditional element of the current Torreperogil urban complex and the Torre Ochavada stands out architecturally. (Location)

Convento de las Hermanas de la Cruz
The convent was inaugurated on October 9, 1923 in the presence of the Founding Mother, Sister Ángela de la Cruz. The Community constituted six sisters, including the superior, the Foundation being placed under the patronage and protection of San Diego de Alcalá. This was constituted in 1923 by the superior Sister Julia, by Sister Coronada (later superior of this convent), and four other Sisters. The activities of the Foundation are aimed at assisting and spiritually and materially aiding poor patients in their own homes. (Location)

Ermita de Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia
The chapel was built between 1593 and 1634. It has a single rectangular nave, restored in the 1960s and covered with a half-barrel vault with lunettes and articulated with five niche chapels on each side. Inside is the image of Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, patron saint of Torreperogil, carved anonymously in Córdoba in 1939, although the current face is by Manuel Mesa, from Granada, who restored it in 1960. It has a main façade that was built between 1960 and 1965. (Location)

Iglesia de Santa María la Mayor
The church was built at the time of Cardinal Merino, in the first half of the sixteenth century. It is considered one of the first classicist works in Spain. Its interior consists of a single nave, which shows its main altarpiece known as the “Stone Altar”, which represents the Descent of Christ from the Cross. On the exterior are two Renaissance portals. Paraje Natural Alto Guadalquivir
South of the Úbeda hills, the Guadalquivir River was dammed in the 1950s in a succession of three small reservoirs: Doña Aldonza (301 hectares), Pedro Marín (240 hectares) and Puente de la Cerrada (122 hectares). The entire area of this artificial wetland, with an increasingly important belt of aquatic vegetation, is surrounded by crops. As far as fauna is concerned, an abundant and varied community of waterfowl is concentrated in these reservoirs, a highlight of which is the colony of purple swans (a species listed as threatened at community level).
