Montellano

Montellano is a delightful municipality that perfectly blends stunning mountain scenery with rich cultural attractions. Its pink marble buildings and natural monuments make it an interesting destination for a relaxing getaway.

The area’s history dates back to the Bronze Age, with archaeological finds like pottery and Roman tombs discovered at Cortijo El Ponce.

A highlight of Montellano is Cotte Castle, featuring a rare 13th-century donjon tower that served both residential and defensive purposes.

In the town centre, you’ll find several notable sites, including the Chapel of La Safa, home to the Sisters of the Cross, and the Chapel of Cristo de los Remedios. Don’t miss La Fuente, a stunning pink marble fountain built in 1875, nor the parish church of San José.

To complete a visit, stroll down Callejón Padres Almuedo, one of the town’s most charming streets.

Natural beauty surrounds Montellano as well, with the impressive Tajos de Mogarejo nearby. This natural monument is of great geomorphological interest, featuring rocks that reveal the area’s undersea past. It’s also situated in the heart of the Sierra de San Pablo, popular for hiking.

Every year, Montellano hosts an agro-tourism and livestock fair, showcasing local handicrafts and products.

Food lovers will enjoy local specialties such as tagarninas stew, fried garlic, and white fish stew.

The main festivities in Montellano include a pilgrimage in May to the Sierra de San Pablo and the local fair known as Jubileos, where vibrant celebrations take place.

Montellano is approximately 63 kilometres from Seville. To get there, simply take the A-376 and then the A-375 for a scenic drive to this lovely village.
