Cúllar - Tarifa

Tarifa is a small farming hamlet in the municipal district of Cúllar in the comarca of Baza. It sits on the Plateau of Chirivel, in the ‘High Plains’ (Altiplano) of Granada. It is located 500m south of the A-92N motorway (junction km 76 from Guadix, or km 372 from Seville). It has a tiny population of about 15. It should not be confused with the busy surfing town of Tarifa in the Cadiz province.

Roman Aqueduct, Almunecar

The aqueduct was built by the Romans during their reign over parts of Andalucia. The aqueduct would have served, not only as a valuable supply of fresh water to the town's population, but also would have been vital for the salting industry believed to be practiced in the town.

Iglesia del Santo, Torres

The Iglesia del Santo, also known as the Ermita de Santo, is a small church in the centre of Torres, built in stone and plastered and painted white in the traditional way, with decorative corners that reveal the stonework.

HISTORY

Throughout the millennia, the Alpujarra has been the setting for countless historical events, remaining silent witness to them all. The Syrians and Phoenicians were the first people to establish commercial relations with the indigenous communities of the Spanish Mediterranean, and they may have been the founders of Sex (Motril), Ábdera (Adra), Sexi (Almuñecar).

Granada Football Club

Granada Club de Fútbol, formerly known as Recreativo de Granada, is a Spanish football club based in Granada city. Founded in April 1931, their first president was Julio López Fernández. In the season of 1941-42, Granada became the third Andalucian football team (after Sevilla and Real Betis) to compete in La Liga (Spanish first division). Their home matches are played at Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes, which seats up to 22, 500 spectators.

Guadix and the East

Found to the west of Granada, this area offers a landscape contrasting the red of the Hoya de Guadix with the green of the river valleys. Its most famous attraction is the Sierra Nevada National Park as well as the various cave-houses: some inhabited by residents and others converted into extremely popular tourist accommodation due to its peculiarity and individuality.

Iglesia de San Juan Bautista

The construction of this church dates back to the middle of the sixteenth century, although several construction phases are evident, up to the eighteenth century; these reforms were due to the adaptation of the building for worship, since in 1552 the Castillo de los Benavides was ceded to the Priest, Don Luis de Alba. The project was carried out by the architect Don Nicolás de Torres with the permission of the Bishop Don Alonso Pecci, and was not completed until thirty years later. The works were initiated by Master Juan de Ostiga and Alonso Barba, architect of the Jaén Cathedral, was appointed. His hallmark is Andalusian mannerism, which mixes the sobriety of classic decorative elements. Inside the figure of San Juan as a child in stone. The bell tower was built in the seventeenth century by José María Orozco, and remodeled in the eighteenth century. Located in Plaza de la Iglesia.

Chiclana

Just inland from the coast Chiclana sits on a small hill overlooking the marismas (salt marshes). The town dates from 1303, when King Fernando IV of Castille gave the land to Guzman El Bueno, the defender of Tarifa, who was succeeded by the Duques de Medina Sidonia.

Málaga Feria

The annual Malaga city fair in August is an exuberant week-long street party with plenty of flamenco and 'fino' (sherry). The fair commemorates the re-conquest of the city by Isabella and Ferdinand in 1487 and traditionally runs for a week from Saturday to Sunday (inclusive) over the third week in August.
