Blas Infante

Blas Infante is known as the "father of Andalucia"having fought for what is today the "Estatuto de Autonomia de Andalucia" (Self-governing statute for Andalucia). Blas Infante Pérez de Vargas was born at 11am 5th July 1885 in the house at 55 Calle Carrera in village of Casares (Malaga).

Venta Quemada - History

The early history of the village stems from its location being near an important Roman road – this is often incorrectly referred to as Via Augusta, but is certainly recorded in in the Antonine Itinerary II. A milestone dedicated to Emperor Octavio Augusto dated 8AD was found in the Venta Quemada river gorge and is conserved in the Cúllar parish church. The Roman road passed through Eliocroca (today’s Lorca), Ad Morun (possibly Chirivel) and Basti (Baza).

Chercos - History

According to Oliver Asín, the name ‘Chercos’ derives from the Mozarab word yerku, which means “the oak”. This is likely because of the oak trees that would have surrounded early settlements in the area. We have to differentiate between Chercos Viejo, the former farmhouse, and Chercos, the town. The establishment of municipal offices in Las Huertas signaled the birth of today’s settlement.

Cúllar Vega

Cúllar Vega is located close to Granada city, and has a striking landscape of black poplar trees. Archaeological remains of the first Roman settlers of the town were found here. However, it was the Muslim occupation that was most important; in the centre, there is a 16th century well. The well marks the point where the rivers Dílar and Genil meet, and water is stored and distributed.

Starlite Festival Marbella 2024

The Starlite Festival is a three month-long music and cultural event held in June, July and August at the Cantera de Nagüeles, in Marbella. It is now established as one of the important annual social and entertainment events in Spain. First and last dates of currently confirmed concerts are 14th June to 31st August 2024.

Vías Pecuarias

Andalucia is covered with what are known as Vías Pecuarias. They are a network of paths or trails that have been used in prior times traditionally to transport livestock to and from pastureland or to market. They can vary in size from mostly forgotten impassable trails to wider, well-used roads.

Ugíjar

Ugíjar consists of five areas: Ugíjar, Cherín, Jorairátar, Los Montoros and Las Canteras. Granada poet Pedro Antonio de Alarcón once described Ugíjar as “aristocrática” (aristocratic). In Ugíjar, tourists can visit various buildings of historical and artistic interest, including Iglesia de la Virgen del Martirio, constructed in the 16th century in a typical mudéjar style.

History of Cabra del Santo Cristo

Human presence in this area dates back to the Bronze Age, evident from a series of remains discovered in the Sierra de Cabra. During the Iberian era, the region formed part of a commercial route linking Granada with the Guadalquivir Valley. In the Hispano-Muslim period, a citadel was erected on the Cerro de San Juan. Some historians suggest it could be the Bagtawira fortress, belonging to a significant family that rebelled against the Umayyads at the close of the ninth and the beginning of the tenth century.
