Seville Operas - Don Juan / Don Giovanni - Mozart

This opera is based on the legend of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer. It was premiered by the Prague Italian Opera at the National Theatre (of Bohemia), now called the Estates Theatre, in 1787. Although sometimes classified as comic, the work blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements. It is one of several Mozart operas set in Seville, the others being The Barber of Seville.

In approximately 800BC the Phoenicians were the first settlers in the area and there are artefacts from this period in the town’s museum in the Castle of San Miguel.

Pinar de Cánavas Natural Monument

Located on the fringes of the Sierra Mágina Natural Park, this centuries-old woodland of Aleppo pine trees (pinus halepensis) is one of the best preserved of its kind in Andalucia. The trees, aged between 100 and 250 years, are home to a rich variety of birds.

The old cinemas of Andalucia have largely been replaced by large multiscreen air-conditioned complexes, showing mainly Spanish and dubbed US films (very few are subtitled in other languages). Going to the cinema is an idea 'rainy day activity'.

Semana Santa - Holy week in Andalucia

Holy Week, Semana Santa, in Andalucia is an event that literally transforms towns and cities across this region. Processions of elaborately decorated floats with Jesus and Mary statues, groups of pointy-hood wearing Nazarenos (penitents), and shrill brass bands, walk slowly through the streets, from their parish church to the cathedral and back.

La Cola de Embalse de Arcos Natural Area

This embalse (reservoir), close to the hilltop town of Arcos de la Frontera, is worth a visit for its waterfowl, particularly in winter when there are many more birds here. It is also a stopping place for migratory birds. The area covers 120ha and includes the reservoir and small surrounding area.

Sierras de Cazorla, Segura y Las Villas Natural Park

With a total surface area of 209,920ha and covering almost a fifth of Jaen province, this is Spain's largest protected area and one its most extensive forested zones. Located in eastern Jaen province, it connects the Sierra Morena and the Subbética mountain ranges. The highest peak in this immense park is Pico Empanada at 2,107m and the entire park is higher than 600m.

History of Seville City

Seville has a long, rich and fascinating history. The Romans governed the whole of Spain for more than six centuries, their first colony, Italica, is close to the city, and can still be visited today.

Lagunas de Archidona Natural Reserve

The only lakes in Andalucia occupying a depression in the land formed by erosion, the Lagunas de Archidona are two lakes situated 900m apart which make up a protected area of 193ha. The biggest lake, Laguna Grande, is freshwater and significantly deep at 10m, with no significant seasonal fluctuations in its water level. The Laguna Chica is saltwater and shallow, with a fluctuating water level.

Tennis Tournaments in Andalucia

The mild climate also attracts major international competitions to the area, both on the Costa del Sol and in major inland cities. In 2023 and 2024, the two top global team events in the tennis calendar are both holding their finals in the region.
