History of Busquístar

The exact origins of this village are unknown, but evidence suggests that it dates back to the 13th century. During the period of Muslim domination, Busquístar belonged to the 'yuz' of Ferreyra, and then to the Taha of Ferreyra.

Algarrobo

On the Ruta del Sol y del Vino, Algarrobo is divided into two parts, one inland and the other coastal, located 3 km away from each other. The inland urban town is usually referred to as "Algarrobo Pueblo", and the coastal town "Algarrobo Costa". It is named after the algarrobo (carob) tree, with long, dark (when ripe) pods; carob is used as a sweetener.

Iglesia de la Virgen del Rosario

The church is the result of a long construction process that began in 1673 and ended in 1763. It started as a Baroque building and ended up as one of the greatest exponents of Almeria’s Neoclassicism. It is therefore an atypical building.

Genalguacil - Encuentros de Arte 1995

A bi-annual event during the first two weeks in August on even years there is an art festival in Genalguacil called "Los Encuentros de Arte del Valle del Genal", and prize-winning works of art are created by 'Artists in residence' and placed on permanent public display throughout the village afterwards. Granada - Asparagus Andalusian Style

Cut the asparagus into 4-5 centimeter lengths. Cook them in boiling salted for 8 minutes and drain, reserving the liquid. Heat the oil in an earthenware cazuela. Fry the garlic and slices of bread until golden, then remove them from the pan. In the same oil, fry the drained asparagus.

Horse Drawn Carriages

Horse drawn carriages have always played an enormous role in Andalusia's great heritage. It has proved to be a very popular discipline within the equine community, almost more popular than dressage in the competition ring. More commonly, it is linked to the great tradition of pilgrimages (romerías).

Montejaque

As in all the pueblos blancos, Montejaque dates from the time of the Berber settlers, after the Moslem conquest. Located in a semi-hidden bowl hidden by circular rocky outcrops, it overlooks a small fertile valley of olive groves.

Iglesia de Santa María

The construction of the neo-Romanesque church was commissioned by the Count of Aguilar. The bell tower did not appear in the original design due to limited budget, and was added centuries later when the Church was completely renovated.

Hotels in La Axarquía

Fray Leopoldo
