Guaro

Guaro is a modest white village on the edge of the Sierra de las Nieves natural park. Thanks to its elevated position, at over 350 metres above sea level, the village offers privileged views across the surrounding countryside. Some of the best vistas are from its 16th century church of San Miguel, found at the top of the village’s narrow, winding streets.

After School Activities

Many state schools offer after-school activities such as sports - rollerblading, roller-hockey, athetics, basketball; English; computing; arts and crafts. Most towns have a public polideportivo (sports centre) which offers classes in a number of sports, from swimming (summer, and winter if covered), padel and tennis, to karate, football and basketball. You can also find public music and dance centres.

Ermita de las Ánimas

The chapel was built in 1939 when the Civil War ended. It is a small box-floor hermitage built in plastered masonry of single height and covered with gabled Arab tile, on which a small wrought-iron cross appears.

Ensalada de pimientos asados

Roast the red peppers: wash and dry well, and poke once with a fork. Place in an oiled shallow baking dish and bake, uncovered, at medium high for an hour or so, until the peppers are very tender when pierced with a fork. This is best done early in the day or the day before, but if you have a microwave you can speed up the process (though best flavour is acquired in the oven or over hot coals, if you have them).

Car Hire

More visitors rent cars in Spain than any other European country. Car rental in Spain is the least expensive in Europe due to the strong competition and on the Costa del Sol car rental is no exception where it is relatively easy to hire a car. If you are flying to Málaga Airport or Gibraltar Airport, these are the usual places to hire a car. Find the offers by checking on our car hire pages of these airports.

History of Pórtugos

Pórtugos' origins as an urban centre date back to the Roman Empire, as its name clearly has Latin roots, coming from the word 'portus', meaning 'place of passage'. However, no remains from this period have been found. It was during the Muslim period that the region, and Pórtugos in particular, developed.

Benalauría

Benalauría is a small village in the Ronda Mountains (Serranía de Ronda) in the Genal River Valley. The populations hovers around 500 and the natives are known not as “benalaurianos” – as one might expect – but as “jabatos”.

Practical Tips - Seville Feria

Car: don't even try to park near the Feria, unless you have a micro-car like a Smart which will fit into the smallest spaces. Instead, leave it at the Charco de la Pava car park, and catch the shuttle bus to the main recinto. Bear in mind that the police will be out in force with breathalyser checkpoints, so don't drink and drive.

Torre del Charche

Also known as, Torre Chacón, the medieval Islamic tower was built as a watchtower, perfectly situated high on a hill. Located 2km south of Vélez Rubio.

New Flamenco - Pata Negra

Formed by the Sevillano duo of brothers Raimundo and Rafael Amador Fernández, Pata Negra took their name (ostensibly) from the prime form of mountain-dried ham, Pata Negra (black hoof) and their direction from the blues, as displayed on their later recording, 'Blues de la Frontera'. The central duo split in the mid-1990s but continue on solo projects.

Every year on July 16th Virgin del Carmen Day is celebrated in Nerja in honour of the town’s maritime tradition. The man who designed this boat was Jose Calvente, also known as Pepe el Califate

The church was built from 1640 onwards, opposite the site occupied by the previous Iglesia de Santa María, which was destroyed during the Moorish Rebellion. It was renovated in 1771 according to the project of the architect Francisco Ruiz Garrido de Vera.
