Hornos de Calcinación

The Calcination Furnaces were recently recovered and depict a faithful reflection of the mining past of Lucainena de las Torres. After extraction, the ore was treated in these furnaces, before subsequent transport via rail.

Electricity

The Spanish domestic power system is 220 or 225 volts AC. Standard continental two pin plugs and three pin plugs (with earth) are used. A two pin plug will fit in a three pin socket. Americans with 110V equipment will need a transformer which can be purchased at most ironmongers while the British will only need a plug adapter which is easy to find.

New cross-country ski trail. A new 2,500m-long cross-country (Nordic) trail is located next to the lower chairlift at Virgen de las Nieves, to cater for the growing number of those practising this winter sport.

Hotels in Estepona

Estepona has a growing selection of hotels. The most expensive and luxurious hotels in Estepona are the Kempinski and Villa Padierna, both a few kilometres to the east of the town. The H10 and the Hotel Fuerte Estepona are situated 2km west and are both frontline to the beach, ideal for families.

Puerto Del Puente (Bridge Gate)

At the north end of the Roman bridge formerly used to enter the city enclosure near the Mosque, rises the Puerto del Puente or Bridge Gate. It was completed in the days of Philip II. The present triumphal arch is the work of Hernán Ruiz III and replaces what was first a Roman gate mentioned at the time of Julius Cesar and later a Moorish gate. A documented restoration took place in 720 AD. Today it is a traffic island.

Playa de los Genoveses

One of the more popular coves in the natural Park. Park your car and walk the last few hundred meters. This and other coves are accessible on the dirt coastal road that leads west from the pretty village of San José (last civilisation).

Palenciana - History

During the Middle Ages, Palenciana was part of Benamejí. During the Muslim era it belonged to the Cora de Rayya (Málaga) and, after the fall of the Caliphate, to the Kingdom of the Banu Ziri of Granada, despite its having been initially incorporated by Fernando III into the Christian domain.

Mosque - Cathedral of Córdoba city

The Mezquita (Mosque) dates back to the 10th century when Córdoba reached its zenith under a new emir, Abd ar-Rahman III who was one of the great rulers of Islamic history. At this time Córdoba was the largest, most prosperous cities of Europe, outshining Byzantium and Baghdad in science, culture and the arts. The development of the Great Mosque paralleled these new heights of splendour.

Corral del Carbon, Granada

The Arabic Word bib means gate and rambla river bank. Until the end of the 19th century, there stood, at the plaza´s east end, a large Moorish gate which gave the place its name - gate of the strand, because it stood on the sandy bank of the river which now flows unseen beneath the Calle de los Reyes Catolicos.

Imagine that you hire a new employee and the first thing he does is stake out a comfortable area for his afternoon nap. That is precisely what happened to Englishman Terry Clear when he hired a construction company to build his country home in rural, inland Andalucia in 2003. "Before they did anything on the house, they looked for the perfect place to set up a plastic shield for shade and tie their hammocks between the olive trees," he remembers with a good sense of humour.
