Sierra Nevada National Park

The Sierra Nevada is a dramatic, rugged and extensive mountain range, the highest in Europe after the Alps and the most significant section of the Cordillera Penibética. The protected area encompasses 86,208ha of torrential rivers, sheer-sided gorges, stony scree slopes, glacial lakes between snowy summits and, in the foothills of the Alpujarras, cultivated terraces of almond trees and vegetables.

Michelle Chaplow has lived and worked in Andalucia in Southern Spain for over 20 years as a freelance photographer specialising in travel and tourism having studied photography at Seville University. Her work has appeared in magazines, books and newspapers all over Europe, Australia, the United States of America and even China. In 1996 she was awarded a prestigious state contract by Turespaña, the Spanish Tourist Board. In 2001 she received an honorary mention for her continuous work in the field of photography in promoting Spanish tourism and the Ortiz Echagüe prize given by the Spanish Ministry of Tourism and Commerce.

Balneario Sierra Alhamilla, Almeria

The wonderful 18th century two-storey building, which now houses the Sierra Alhamilla Balneario (Spa), was restored from ruins in 1984 by Isidro Perez. Originally built on Roman and Arabic ruins, it took 8 years of painstaking work to bring it back to its original historic beauty and retaining its authentic medieval atmosphere.

Conjunto Arqueológico (Tózar)

The archaeological complex consists of the Mozarabic Necropolis, three tenth-century silos, a prehistoric dolmen known as 'Pileta de la Zorra', a defensive system from the Spanish Civil War (1936) and one of the few remaining Mozarabic farmhouse settlements in Andalusia, dating from the ninth to twelfth centuries.

Los Caganchos

The Caganchos were three gypsy blacksmiths who were born in Triana, Seville, during the nineteenth century. These brothers are remembered for their antiquated style of singing, especially with the primitive forms of flamenco like the martinetes and siguiriyas.

Adra - History

Adra was founded by the Phoenicians during the eighth century BC, however, according to archaeological remains found on the Montecristo hill, a site classified as being of important cultural significance, the area has a Punic past. Punic control of the colony is thought to have been established from the fourth century BC, and at the end of the second century BC it passed to the control of the Roman Empire in the province of Hispania Ulterior. Evidence suggests that the Roman presence in Adra persisted for three centuries.
