Things to see near El Burgo

On the south side of the main bridge by the pueblo that crosses the Río Turón, is a track that leads upstream. Just about passable by car this is a circular route that takes approximately two hours to drive (not recommended in rainy season) or six hours to walk and emerges two kilometres further down the Malaga road (see La Fuensanta).

Valle de Abdalajis

The delightful village of Valle de Abdalajis is located in the southern part of the Antequera district in Málaga province and covers about 21 square kilometers. This is a mountain-side village, perched at 340 meters above sea level is set against the impressive backdrop of the Penibética range that rises above its whitewashed homes and cobblestone streets.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Virgen de la Cabeza

The church is situated within the old mosque of Benahadux, which after its consecration in 1505 was erected under the invocation of the Virgen de la Cabeza and her patron, San José. In 1770, the Town Hall sent a letter to the Bishop of Almeria indicating the lamentable state of the old church and the need to build a new religious building.

New Flamenco - Tabletom

Much-loved stars of the nuevo flamenco underground, formed in the mid-1970s in Málaga when bands like this had to go underground, Tabletom might best be described as Spain’s answer to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. Mixing flamenco with jazz, blues and rock, with a philosophy borrowed from anarchism and the left, they are stalwarts of the Andaluz alternative scene. By their own admission, influences can vary from Miles Davis to English progressive rock bands such as Van der Graaf Generator.

Cartaya Beaches

The municipality of Cartaya boasts just over 4km of sandy estuary beaches, protected from the winds by a sandy spit of land opposite, just across the Rio Piedras. The beach at this small, friendly fishing village called El Rompido is protected from the open sea by the spit that extends across the Río Piedras estuary.

Isla Cristina Beaches - Playa de la Casita Azul

Playa de la Casita Azul is an isolated beach stretching 2.8km long surrounded by dunes and pine trees and is named after the little blue house located on the beach. This used to be a forest house where for many years its inhabitants took care of the surroundings, specifically the island's pine forests. The building has been renovated as a Nature Interpretation Centre, a space for environmental and tourism promotion.

There are two types of rentals in Spain: short term and long term. Short term rentals are basically designed for holiday makers and come with contracts headed by the phrase "Por Temporada", which translates literally as "seasonal". Long term rentals contracts are headed by the word "Vivienda", which means "home" or "residence" and are designed for those planning to stay long term in this country.

Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Montesión

The church dates back to 1505 and was built on the site of a former mosque. Around the time of the Moorish rebellion in the same century, the area was invaded by the pirate Omar- Al Askenn, who looted the population in 1566.

Electricity

The Spanish domestic power system is 220 or 225 volts AC. Standard continental two pin plugs and three pin plugs (with earth) are used. A two pin plug will fit in a three pin socket. Americans with 110V equipment will need a transformer which can be purchased at most ironmongers while the British will only need a plug adapter which is easy to find.

La Duquesa seems like a thousand miles away from the throng of the holiday resorts. It is relatively quiet during most of the year. The marina and restaurants terraces come alive in the summer.

Puerto Del Puente (Bridge Gate)

At the north end of the Roman bridge formerly used to enter the city enclosure near the Mosque, rises the Puerto del Puente or Bridge Gate. It was completed in the days of Philip II. The present triumphal arch is the work of Hernán Ruiz III and replaces what was first a Roman gate mentioned at the time of Julius Cesar and later a Moorish gate. A documented restoration took place in 720 AD. Today it is a traffic island.
