Vélez Blanco

Almeria City - Fascinating Fact 3

It's not well known that John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields Forever in Almeria. He lived in the city in autumn 1966, filming the part of Private Gripweed in Richard Lester's black comedy How I Won the War in the nearby desert at Tabernas. Lennon first stayed in an apartment near El Zapillo, one of the city`s beaches, then he moved to the more spacious 19th-century mansion, Santa Isabel, on Camino de Romero (known locally as Cortijo Romero), with his then-wife Cynthia.

Taberno

Taberno is situated at the foot of the El Madroño mountain range, in the north east of the Almeria province. It has around 1,000 inhabitants, of whom three quarters live in the village itself; the rest reside in its six outlying hamlets, the largest being Santopétar.

Francisco Alarcón - a multidisciplinary artist from Estepona

We spoke with Francisco Alarcón, a multidisciplinary artist from Estepona, who works in painting, sculpture, and mural art. Deeply inspired by the Mediterranean light and landscape of his Costa del Sol hometown, Francisco explores themes of memory, nature, and human connection. His vibrant, large-scale murals inject colour and identity into urban spaces, whilst his posters showcase Andalusian traditions. Whether working on a public wall or canvas, his art reflects a deep-rooted dialogue with place, tradition, and transformation.

Albánchez de Mágina

45 kilometres east of the city of Jaén, within the Sierra de Mágina mountain range, lies Albánchez de Úbeda. Even from a distance, the village can be clearly recognised, its white buildings crowned by an Arab fortress, which was once, due to its strategic postion, one of the most important in the region.

Cordoba Bus Service

There is a modern bus station opposite the RENFE railway station. The bus station itself has become one of the emblematic buildings of Córdoba. The building wone the National Prize for Architecture in 1999 when it was built was built by César Portela. In the car park travellers can observe remains of a Mozarabic house, the junction of two aqueducts and a mosque with Roman ashlars.

Santa Cruz de Marchena

Santa Cruz de Marchena is one of southern Spain’s typical whitewashed villages, surrounded by plots of orange trees and vines. The Plaza Durcal and its neighbouring areas offer the most interesting historical and artistic heritage in the village. It has about 210 inhabitants.

Pueblo Lopez district of Fuengirola

Pueblo Lopez is a surprisingly picturesque little residential community between El Boquetillo neighbourhood and the town centre. This neighbourhood was built in the early 1960’s by an English builder who was determined not to succumb to the increasing tendency at that time to construct high rise buildings.

Leatherwork

In the Middle Ages, the leather workers of Cordoba made the city universally famous for the high quality of their tanning and embossing techniques. Some workshops still survive which use the ancient methods, in both Cordoba and Granada, while leather goods are made all over the region (purses, wallets, belts etc.). One of Spain's best places for leather goods is Ubrique.

Serrato

Serrato as a municipal district was formed as recently as December 2014. Until then it was part of the municipal district of Ronda. It has about 470 inhabitants.Its origins of Seratto date back to the Neolithic era, when small agricultural communities settled here due to the fertile land and the abundance of water. It was in the Roman and Arab period that it grew in importance, particularly Serrato village, which was a Roman town.

La Mojonera

La Mojonera formed part of the Felix district until 1984. The principal economic activity here is the local production of confectionary, which is recognized throughout the region. The town has around 9000 inhabitants.

Turmares

A wonderful opportunity to get close to whales and dolphins in their natural habitat in the Strait of Gibraltar. This is the area of sea where the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet, in the narrow space between the southermost point of Spain, and the African continent.

Ermita de San Antón

The Ermita de San Antón in Dólar is a small traditional chapel that underwent a major restoration in 1952. It preserves the simplicity and charm of rural Andalusian architecture.

Villanueva de San Juan

Lakes used to make up a big part of the landscape around Villanueva de San Juan so it is a rich source of marine fossils. It has about 1,100 inhabitants.
