Convento de San Luís, Velez Blanco

The Convent was built by the second Marquis de los Vélez, Don Luis, and was completed, along with its accompanying church, in 1572. The façade of the church is made of ashlar stone and has a doorway between two oculi, a niche over the access door and the Vélez shield on its sides.

Cártama

While the sprawling white town of Cártama undoubtedly impresses the visitor now, with its ruined hilltop fortress, how much more impressive it must have been in its Roman heyday, with a formidable castle protecting both the town and the river valley - Cartama stands at the head of the Rio Guadalhorce.

School Hours & Holidays

The academic year in Andalucia runs from the second week in September to the third week of June. The main holidays are at Christmas, Easter and the long 10-week summer break. School hours vary depending on the school and are usually from 0900 to 1400 (Infantil and Primary) and 0830 to 1430 (Secondary) with an hour's break for lunch. Lessons are generally divided into teaching periods of 45 minutes.

Ayuntamiento

In 1980, work on the Town Hall was completed. The building contains the Court, Guadalinfo Centre, Post Office and Local Police office. Located in Plaza Andalucía.

La Axarquia

Until around two decades ago the Axarquía region of Andalucía was little known. Then, northern European expatriates discovered the pretty hilltop village of Cómpeta, started buying up some of the run-down 'fincas' and farmhouses in the area and putting it on the map.

Civil Servants

The word “funcionario” is one most foreigners learn rather early on as no one gets very far without meeting one. “Funcionario” is Spanish for “public worker”. The percentage of government workers in Spain is one of the highest in Europe and one that is entrenched in Spanish history as past governments were famous for multiplying their agencies and offices at often amazing rates.

Iglesia de San José

Previously the grain store of the Marquis, the building was later converted into a temple around 1888. At present it has been converted into a municipal exhibition hall and a multipurpose space. The church responds to the typical scheme of the Order of Carmelites.

New Flamenco - Ojos de Brujo

This Barcelona-based group took the nuevo flamenco/pop world by storm with their 1999 debut, 'Vengue', and its mix of world musics, flamenco, latin rhythms and electronica. Home concerts sell out well in advance, and they have been guests at jazz festivals around Spain, northern Europe and the USA.

La Reserva, Sotogrande

La Reserva is the name of the most recent section of the Sotogrande development, including a sixth golf course to be developed under the brand La Reserva Sotogrande. It is located in the Sotogrande Alto, or 'high' mountain side of the coast road, and to the east of the A-2100 road to Castellar.

The initial development of this area began post-2000, including the relocation of the Sotogrande School and the La Reserva Golf Course and Club House, including the front line of villas accompanying the course.

Pueblos Blancos Music Festival in Ronda

Ronda is one of the more well-known towns to feature on the Pueblos Blancos line-up. Famous for its dramatic landscapes, including the El Tajo gorge and the Puente Nuevo bridge that crosses over it, the town is also known for being the birthplace of bullfighting in Spain, with the country’s first bullring standing in the centre of Ronda since the 18th century.
