Estepona Bullring

The bullring dates back to 1972 and, from within, resembles the typical concrete architecture of this era. From the outside it is more interesting, due to the unique asymmetric design created by Juan Moro Urbano, the exterior is landscaped to allow access to the upper terraces without the necessity of steps.

Cadiz City Carnival Poster 2025

The vote for the poster for Carnival 2025 in Cadiz has been mired in controversy. One of the entries was disqualified for using artificial intelligence, and the vote was postponed after the discovery of possible plagiarism in another poster. This turned out not to be the case, so three of the four finalists went through to the final stage, where a public vote would determine the winner, who would receive a prize of 6,000 euros.

Shopping Centres

Most cities now have indoor centro comerciales (shopping centres) with supermarkets, fashion stores, and cafes. The undisputed queen of these is La Cañada in Marbella, which is home to Andalucia’s only Marks & Spencers.

Benalmádena Costa is one of the most cosmopolitan areas on the coast and famed for an abundance of British bars and restaurants. The heart of the resort is the extensively equipped Puerto Marina and here one will find dozens of restaurants and bars serving food from all corners of the world.

Castillo de Torre Alver

This castle was built as a surveillance point over the secondary pass between ndalusia and La Mancha, commonly known as the Camino de Castellar de la Mata (today Castellar de Santiago). Its construction is attributed to the Almohads, although other evidence highlights that it was used to reinforce the borders after the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212). It was in operation until the fall of Santisteban in 1235, most likely abandoned due to the sale of Santisteban to Fernando III. Today, it sits in a ruinous state, with one of its most visible walls pierced with an enormous hole. Declared an Asset of Cultural Interest.

Patron Saints Day

Each town has one or two patron saints. There will be a local bank holiday and celebrations on the day of the patron saint of the town according to the catholic calendar. Check for dates in the town's pages in our regional section.

History of Somontín

The origin of Somontín dates back to the Roman era (second century AD), although evidence suggests that the original nucleus of the village was situated south of the current enclave. The village is likely to have been a place of importance since Emperor Marco Aurelio gave it authorization to coin money.

Marchal

This village was founded in the Middle Ages from a farmstead created by the Moorish era. There are also vestiges of millenary civilisations in Marchal, as can be seen in its archaeological sites.

Jaen City Tranvia

You may have noticed tram line in Jaen city, don't stand around waiting for a tram as you may have a long wait. The Tranvia de Jaen was a modern light railway constructed between 2009 and 2011 at a cost of 75m €. Five low-floor Alstom Citadis trams, model 302, were purchased.
