Granada Province Natural Parks

In Granada province is one of Andalucia's two national parks, the Sierra Nevada, a mountainous region containing the two highest peaks in the Iberian Peninsula and whose summits are often snow-capped. This is the place to come if you're into rock climbing, mountaineering, skiing or, for the less energetic, botany, since the park harbours an incredible array of rare and endemic plants.

Natural Parks in Cádiz Province

Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park is one of Andalucia's most visited parks, renowned for its wildlife, rugged limestone landscape and great hiking territory. Offering a more gentle walking experience amid centuries-old cork oak woodland is the Alcornocales Natural Park.

Sevilla Province Natural Parks

Part of the Sierra Morena, the extensive Sierra Norte Natural Park is an attractive area of gently rolling hills clad in Mediterranean woodland and dotted with delightful whitewashed towns and villages, linked by some excellent walks.

Dinosaur footprints Natural Monument

This is one of two sites in Andalucia with dinosaur prints. The 24 prints cover an area of sandstone only 20m² on a site near Santisteban del Puerto, northeast of Úbeda. They date from the Late Triassic period over 230 million years ago, but the prints are still a mystery since scientists have been unable to identify the species of dinosaur that made the prints.

Roman roads in Andalucia

Via Herculea or Via Exterior was an important Roman road into Hispania, reaching as far as Gades (Cadiz). This 1,500 km-road from Narbonne in Gaul to Cadiz was renamed Via Augusta after the emperor, who ordered it to be renovated between 8 BC and 2 BC. Many Roman roads in Andalucia are today referred to as Via Augusta. This is a misnomer, although other roads that Augustus renovated may have been referred to locally as Via Augusta. The confusion arises because the Romans only named principal routes.

Baeza

Baeza is a compact provincial town with a kind of perpetual Sunday air. At its heart are the combined Plaza Mayor and paseo which, flanked by pavement cafes, are delightfully low key and atmospheric. It has about 15,770 inhabitants.

Villatorres

Villatorres was born in 1975 from the merging of Villagordo, Torrequebradilla and the nucleus of Vados de Torralba. The landscape is dominated by cereal fields and olive groves. It has about 4,300 inhabitants.

Rio Tinto Mining Park

The Rio Tinto area of Huelva boasts 3,000 years of mining history, from the Phoenicians then Romans, right up to to the 1990s. Today, as part of the Rio Tinto Mining Park you can visit the museum in the old hospital, the Peña de Hierro mine, and a Victorian-era British house; and take a 22km train ride.

Ardales Cave

The cave complex situated in the extreme west of the Serrezuela, at about 600 metres altitude above sea level and has a geological age of around 2.5 million years. It has been un-changed for the last 30.000 years. It is a few km east of the village of Ardales.
