Arriate

Arriate is a jack-in-the-box; a surprise package in a plain wrapper. Enter it from any direction, and it appears to be a sleepy rural village waiting, with no sense of urgency, for its grass to grow and its paint to dry. Then, abracadabra! - a corner is turned and the visitor is suddenly thrown into the sophisticated high street of a chic and bustling small town.

Accreditation

As you shop for an international school you will find a wide array of accreditations, certifications and memberships. The logos provided by the organisations behind these stamps of approval look wonderful, but, as a consumer, it is important to know what they really mean. Here is a guide to the most common – and a few of the less common

Ermita de las Maravillas

The seventeenth-century chapel has a box floor plan with a gabled roof, now concreted. The interior has a half-barrel vault with transverse arches and lunettes. Next to its main façade, there is a stone cross called the San Juan cross.

Guadiaro - Barbesula roman town

Between Guadiaro amd Pueblo Nuevo de Guadiaro lie the remains of a small Roman town called Barbésula, which was dedicated mainly to the fish salting industry. Kilns used in the manufacture of amphoras (clay vessels) for the export of Garum have been discovered here. Due to its location at the mouth of the Guadiaro River valley, it may also have been an import and export center for agricultural products. The remains of a temple dedicated to Diana have also been excavated onsite.

Tapas

When we think of Spain, tapas are one of the first things that comes to mind. The delicious little plates of goodness that go perfectly with a caña of beer or a glass of wine are an icon of Spain, so spend some time hopping from bar to bar tasting them. There are so many to try, from gambas al pil pil and tortilla de patatas to albondigas (meatballs) and Russian salad, you'll never get bored of them.

The museum’s holdings are made up of a collection of several thousand pieces from various archaeological sites in the southeast and mainly from the Comarca de los Vélez and other materials of diverse origin such as lithic pieces from the Sahara and numerous objects of ethnological interest.

Eras Tradicionales

‘Threshing circles’, or eras, are normally circular surfaces paved with slate slabs. They are typically situated in areas where there is a strong wind, which makes it easier to separate the grain from the straw.

Santuario de Monteagud

The Monteagud Sanctuary is dedicated to the Virgen de la Cabeza, a symbol of the Sierra de los Filabres and the spiritual backbone of the entire region. The sanctuary is a religious and recreational space with spectacular views of the sea, desert and mountains.

Zuheros - History

Zuheros was originally settled by the Ibericos Pleno to protect an ancient roadway known as the Camino de los Metedores, the smugglers track. The Romans followed shortly afterwards, leaving behind them relics found in the Las Cuevas de los Murcielagos. Towards the end of the ninth century, Banu Himsi soldiers built a castle on the impregnable rocks, called Sujaira.

Jaen Archaeology and Fine Arts Museum

The building of the Museum of Archaeology and Fine Arts, or simply Museum of Jaén, dates from 1920 and was designed by the architect, Antonio Flórez Urdapilleta. It is designed as a square footprint  arranged around a central patio. The patio and interior portal, of the lost Iglesia de San Miguel date from 1561.
