Festivals in San Roque

If visiting San Roque village or one of the other suburbs in the area, bear in mind the following dates (dates change slightly each year to take in weekends where possible): February: Carnival time. Easter Week - when the streets of San Roque a filled with the scent of orange blossom, jasmine and incense and the whole village is involved in organizing and taking part in the processions and celebrations of Semana Santa (Easter).

Polopos

Polopos is formed by various different areas: Castillo de Baños, La Mamola, Haza del Lino, Haza del Trigo, La Guapa and Polopos. The first two are located on the coast: one on a plain known as Puerta de Baños and the other at the foot of a hill topped with a watchtower; the others are located inland.

Toro Toro

Best-selling author Michael Morpurgo turns his storytelling skills to the drama and tragedy of the Spanish Civil War, illustrated by Michael Foreman. TORO,TORO is the story of a young boy growing up in Andalucia, Spain, on a farm rearing bulls for the bull ring. Antonito hand rears a little black calf and they become firm friends, but the boy doesn't yet understand the fate of the black bulls -- the corrida and death.

Tabernas

The landscapes surrounding Tabernas are practically lunar. Its canyons and rocky plains have been used as film sets since the days of Clint Eastwood and the Spaghetti Westerns. More recently, Game of Thrones was filmed in the desert gorges known as the Rambla del Cautivo and La Rambla del Buho near the village.

Almeria City - Fascinating Fact 3

It's not well known that John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields Forever in Almeria. He lived in the city in autumn 1966, filming the part of Private Gripweed in Richard Lester's black comedy How I Won the War in the nearby desert at Tabernas. Lennon first stayed in an apartment near El Zapillo, one of the city`s beaches, then he moved to the more spacious 19th-century mansion, Santa Isabel, on Camino de Romero (known locally as Cortijo Romero), with his then-wife Cynthia.

Huércal de Almería

Huércal de Almería formed part of the municipal district of Almería until the nineteenth century, but today it is an important industrial centre in the Andarax Valley. It has about 17,418 inhabitants. During the Islamic period, the municipality of Almería coincided with the older community in the region. Both were limited by the sea and the surrounding rivers.

Andalucia Costa del Sol, Spanish Open 2025

Nastasia Nadaud of France secured a four-stroke victory at the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España presented by Oysho, the season-ending event on the Ladies European Tour, with a score of 66 (-6).

Baños de la Encina

Baños de la Encina offers visitors interesting historical and artistic heritage as well as attractions for lovers of nature. Once called simply Baños, the village adopted ‘de la Encina’ (‘of the holm oaks’) in the thirteenth century, after a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary amongst the oak trees.

History of Paterna del Río

The name of Paterna seems to originate in Paternum or Paternus, although the remains of Iberian swords found in the Gaviarra mines cast doubt on this assumption. The dramatic and challenging landscape of La Alpujarra meant that its Arab occupation took some centuries, but the Mozarabic population was very important in the times of the Caliphate. In 913, the young Caliph Abd al-Rahman III had to cross Sierra Sulaira.

Cordoba Bus Service

There is a modern bus station opposite the RENFE railway station. The bus station itself has become one of the emblematic buildings of Córdoba. The building wone the National Prize for Architecture in 1999 when it was built was built by César Portela. In the car park travellers can observe remains of a Mozarabic house, the junction of two aqueducts and a mosque with Roman ashlars.

Gérgal

Gérgal is home to an interesting castle, constructed in the Lombard style, which dominates the slopes and terraces of the village and, despite being built in the sixteenth century, remains in good condition today. The village has about 1000 inhabitants.

El Granado

El Granado is located in the extreme west of the province, east of Villanueva de los Castillejos, only a few kilometres from the border with Portugal. Its mountainous landscape extends over an area of almost 1000 hectares and has approximately 650 inhabitants.
