The municipality of Vélez-Rubio is the capital of Los Vélez district, forming part of the Sierra María-Los Vélez Natural Park. It has been declared an official Place of Cultural Interest due to its historical heritage and is a very popular destination for tourists.

Somontín forms a natural balcony, known as the Balcón del Almanzora (Balcony of the Almanzora), overlooking the whole Almanzora Valley, a corner of Almería from which visitors can enjoy the beauty of the area. It has around 450 inhabitants.

West of Aracena is the GR 41.3 that runs all the way to La Nava taking in Los Marines, Fuenteheridos and Galaroza. This footpath goes past many groves of sweet chestnut trees, so it is a particularly beautiful walk to do in the autumn, when the changing colours of the chestnuts are spectacular.

Although of significance to both the Iberian and Roman civilisations, it was the Moors who brought splendour to Iznatoraf. During this period, and later under Christian rule, strong links were forged with Granada and Córdoba, and the village prospered.

Like neighbouring Granada, Almeria province is famous for its troglodytic villages, where many homes are dug out of soft sand-coloured cliffs. These "casas-cuevas" (cave-houses) provide excellent insulation from the dry, desert-like fierce heat typical of this province.

Paterna del Río is the home of the unique recreational areas of Fuente Agria and Guarros, also known as the Baños de Santiago, the thermal waters of which are said to be particularly effective on skin complaints. It has about 370 inhabitants. The name of Paterna seems originate to in Paternum or Paternus, although the remains of Iberian swords found in the Gaviarra mines cast doubt on this assumption.
