San Pedro lies in a great position, just a short drive away from the well-known Marbella and the luxurious Puerto Banús, surrounded by the luxury golf courses of Malaga. It has a fantastic beach with an inviting promenade, accompanied by some quality restaurants giving great sea views.
Chauchina takes its name from the Latin word “sanciuos” which means “willow”. This is due to the large amount of willow trees in the area. Many relics such as coins, metals and pots from the Neolithic era have been discovered here. However, it was during the Muslim occupation that Chauchina as we know it was born.
San Pedro Boulevard is a park built over the main coastal highway through this town. Since it opened in December 2014, the park has become a popular feature of the town. One of the more distinctive aspects of the boulevard is its eye-catching footbridge that passes over the central roundabout and connects the two areas on either side of it.
This tremendously varied walk makes for a great full day excursion. Leaving the pretty village of La Iruela you first climb up past the Alberquilla spring before contouring round the northern flank of the Escribano.

Matalascañas is a popular destination for beach lovers and visitors to the Parque Nacional de Donaña. It has a number of hotels and hostals or guesthouses, providing lovely places to stay. The hotels in Matalascañas are usually bigger, resort-style hotels with swimming pools and direct access to the beach.
Torvizcón is the largest town in the Contraviesa, the part of the Alpujarras between the Sierra Nevada and the sea. The village’s traditional whitewashed houses are silhouetted against the Sierra Nevada, and from anywhere on the outskirts visitors can enjoy amazing views, including over the Guadalfeo river.
One of the most notable rebellions of the time was by General Jose Maria de Torrijos. He had spent time in London and drew support from liberals like Tennyson and Carlysle and John Sterling whose Irish cousin Lieutenant Robert Boyd had a 4,000 pound inheritance and funded a ship which was seized by British authorities on request of Spanish envoy in London. Sterling withdrew after suddenly becoming engaged.

We received an email from one of our readers, Cheryl Jessop asking if Semana Santa would still go ahead. We replied "As far as we know the Feria is still planned to go ahead. Of course it will depend on events over the next month, but we do not hear any talk of cancellations in local media or social media." Gorafe is famous for its various dolmens and cave houses as well as its impressive natural environment which is perfect for hiking. A delight for history-lovers, this village near Guadix, in the Altiplano of Granada province, has the highest concentration of dólmens in Spain and part of Europe – nearly 200 of the prehistoric burial chambers.
This almost-abandoned mining village in the north of the province of Huelva is located a few km from the border with region of Extremadura and province of Badajoz. It is dependent on the nearby village of Cala, a few km away.
