Huelva City - Five Fascinating Facts

Huelva has always been known more for the beaches in the surrounding area, than for the city itself. Known by the Phoenicians as Onuba, it has a long history, closely linked to the sea and nearby mineral riches, and apart from the less attractive industrial port area, has some interesting sights, although many monuments were destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

Mudejar & Romanesque architecture

The mudéjar style of architecture emerged in Andalucía during the 12th century as Romanesque, with its close links to France and Italy, spread through northern and central Spain. The style, unique to southern Spain and lasting into the 16th century, flourished in each region as it was reconquered by the Christians.

Flora

With a relatively high level of rainfall and a reasonable altitude, there is a good coverage of vegetation and trees. The higher and wetter parts offer a range of trees and bushes of all colours, particularly in the autumn months. Greens and yellows, plus the reds of the maple trees contrast with the grey rocks. This is when the trees bear fruit.

Atalaya-Isdabe, Estepona districts

Atalaya-Isdabe occupies the easternmost end of the Estepona municipality, lying between Avenida Hacienda del Sol to the west and the Río Guadalmina to the east. The coastal side of this district developed after the beachfront Atalaya Park Hotel opened, and the area now features a wide range of villas, apartments, and hotels.

Oasys and Fort Bravo

Lighthouse

A lighthouse has stood on the natural limestone headland known as Punta Doncella at the west end of La Rada beach in Estepona since an 8,5 metre structure was completed by engineer Antonio Molina in 1863. The original olive oil burning lamp was purchased from Sautter the French maker. It was replaced in 1882 by a paraffin 'Maris' lamp and then by a petrol one in 1904.

The fine white sands are backed by a low ridge of dunes and the marshlands of the Jara and Vega rivers. These rivers run parallel to the beach and have created two lagoons, the Jeli and Montellano.

El Puerto de la Ragua (Ragua Pass) at 2.000m has been a well travel route for both visitors and merchants for many years, and is best known as the Puerto de la Ragua Cross-Country Ski Station.
