There are immigration control points at all Airports and Seaports for those entering Spain from non-Schengen locations. Immigration control is the responsibility of the National Police, separately Customs is the responsibility of the Guardia Civil.

The free movement within Spain and the EU became effective when Spain fully joined on 1st January 1992, after a six-year transition period. The free movement of persons is a fundamental right guaranteed by the EU to its citizens. It enables every EU citizen to travel, work and live in any EU country without special formalities.
