Aeropuerto de Alicante-Elche airport is the major gateway for visitors to the Costa Blanca. It is also convenient for those travelling to north-east Andalucia - Almeria and Jaen provinces. The fifth-busiest airport in Spain, it handles over twenty million passengers every year. Over three-quarters of flights are international: Alicante is especially popular with the English, the Dutch and the German.
LOCATION AND GETTING THERE
Aeropuerto de Alicante-Elche is located 10km south-east of the city, in Elche. A taxi takes to the centre about 15 minutes and costs about 15 euros; buses leave every 20 minutes (6.20am-11.10pm), costing 2.60euro. You can also hire a car; all the major international domestic and companies have offices.
Alicante Airport has three terminals although only Terminal 3 is in use (all flights now go through Terminal 3 and the future of Terminals 1 and 2 is yet to be decided). The new terminal is an L-shaped complex and which has six times the combined area space of the previous two terminals, increasing the airport's annual capacity from nine to twenty million passengers. The airport offers all the usual facilities on its' six floors: restaurants, bars, a VIP lounge ATMs, wifi, tourist information office, post office and car park. As in most modern airports, the shops offer an excellent selection of items to keep you and your family happy until you board your flight, or for presents for those back home: food, music and electronics, toys, fashion, wines, watches, jewellery, accessories, wines, perfumes and cosmetics, and local and international press.
