Suggested Museums and Galleries in Seville
Seville has many excellent museums representing a wide range of subjects, historical periods and styles. With its rich artistic heritage, it's not surprising that Seville has a number of art galleries under the auspices of the city authorities.
Museo Bellas Artes
As the city of Golden Age masters Velázquez, Murillo and Zurbarán, you’d expect Seville to boast an appropriately impressive art gallery. Housed in a former monastery, as so many cultural establishments are in Seville, this collection takes you from the 16th century through to the 20th; religious paintings – “Inmaculadas” (Virgin Mary), portraits, allegorical scenes - take centre stage. Good temporary exhibits too. Museo de Bellas Artes
Museo de Artes y Costumbres Populares
Situated in Plaza América, at the eastern end of Maria Luisa Park (see Attractions), this museum shows eclectic everyday objects that offer an insight into 20th century Andalucian life, as well as fascinating exhibits on traditional artisan skills, in its basement galleries. Excellent temporary exhibitions occupy the ground floor and on the veranda, illustrated panels introduce celebrated architect Aníbal González, who designed Plaza de España (see Attractions) and this exquisite Expo 1929 Múdejar pavilion. Museo de artes y costumbres populares
Museo Casa Fabiola – Mariano Bellver Collection
A personal collection of paintings, sculpture, furniture, and Holy Week figures, housed in a Barrio Santa Cruz mansion. Museo Casa Bellver
Museo del Baile Flamenco
Immerse yourself in this captivating music and dance form, which was born in Andalucia centuries ago. Interactive exhibits trace flamenco’s origins and influences, while on a super-wide curved screen dancers break out their moves. See outfits worn by performers at 19th-century café cantantes, where flamenco was first performed commercially to a public audience. Watch a show in the main patio afterwards – there are three each evening. Museo del Baile Flamenco
CAAC (Centro de Arte Andaluz Contemporáneo)
The city’s main contemporary art collection, this is housed in another former monastery, La Cartuja, across the river from the centre; it was also used as a ceramic factory in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exhibitions of both Spanish and international contemporary artists – but largely Andalucian - are shown in the refectory, monks’ cells and other ecclesiastical spaces. Extensive gardens beckon for a quiet, shady stroll away from the city centre’s hustle and bustle. CAAC
