Castillo Nazari

Castillo Nazari

The castle masterfully exemplifies the architecture of border castles during the Islamic period in Spain. Its strategic location on the rocky outcrop highlights the influence of the topography on site selection. Its structures, such as towers, walls, and gates, have been precisely adapted to the rocks, slopes, and promontories of the surrounding terrain. In fact, the intertwining of the castle and nature is so impressive that it seems as if nature itself forged the fortification, resulting in a harmonious fusion between human creation and the natural environment. Following the custom of these border castles, the fortress is composed of different levels: the upper level dedicated exclusively to military use and as the last bastion against the enemy; the lower level for the civilian population and the families of the defenders, except for the high-ranking officials who usually lived in the upper enclosure; and a refuge for the inhabitants of the nearby area in case of attack. The towers served as watchtowers and defensive positions against potential attacks, using the rocks as their base and support. Located on Calle Iglesia.
