Following the destruction of the original 1960's polo field at La Playa. Construction began in 1984 of a new ground by both Santa Maria and Ayala polo clubs. The ground featured a grandstand and became the main area for polo at Sotogrande in the 1980s and 1990s. .Los Pinos took over in the 2000s as Santa Maria club's main ground.
The Rio Sotogrande facilities consisted of two playing fields and a multipurpose tent prepared for events.
The ground was permanently closed for matches in the early 2020s. It is used for stables and exercising horses. The grandstand remains in a poor condition.
