Sotogrande Polo Tournament results 2024

Most of the 2024 summer season matches including the finals took place at the Los Pinos grounds near Sotogrande Marina. The Los Pinos grounds are often referred to a Santa Maria club grounds, however since 2021 they have been leased to the Alaya Club and the official name is "Ayala Polo Club Sede Los Pinos". Some of the 2024 early-summer matches took place at the Ayala grounds in San Enrique so check the fixtures.

Sotogrande Polo Tournaments

The Sotogrande Polo Tournaments are held every year from April to September. They are divided into four groups. First the Spring Tournaments, then the Early Summer Tournaments, followed by the prestigious International Summer Tournament, and finally the End of Summer Tournaments.

Dos Lunas Polo Club

Club de Polo Dos Lunas is a polo club located in in San Martín del Tesorillo near Sotogrande specializing in dressage and polo. It focuses its activity on preparing horses for top-level competition. It has its own polo fields with 34 boxes available for two teams during the summer Polo season or for practice time in winter season.

Ponies and Players

The polo pony ranges from 14.2-16 hands (147-163cm) in height and is usually either thoroughbred or thoroughbred crosses. Polo ponies are selected carefully for their ability to move in quick bursts of speed, and their great stamina, agility and manoeuvrability. It is vital that the horse remains responsive under pressure and does not become excited or difficult to control.

The Game of Polo

Each polo team consists of four riders and their mounts. The modern game lasts roughly two hours and is divided into periods of play called chukkas, of which there are four to eight, 7-minute chukkas. At the end of each 7-minute chukka, play continues for an additional 30 seconds or until a stoppage in play, whichever comes first. There is a four-minute interval between chukkas and a ten-minute halftime.

Polo in Spain

Polo originates from ancient Persia from the sixth century BC to the first century AD. During the fifteenth and sixteenth century, the game was eventually passed from Persia to other parts of Asia, particularly India, Pakistan and China.

Sotogrande Polo

The famous grounds of Sotogrande have been dubbed the 'Wimbledon of Polo Pitches' - they are renowned as the best in Spain, if not Europe. This is partly due to their location; flanked by a tropical nursery and the Guadiaro River, with a stunning backdrop of brillant blue skies and distant mountains. Yet they are close to the main A-7 highway, so easily accessible.

Sotogrande Gold Cup 2022

Dubai polo team won the 2022 Copa de Oro in the six team High-handicap, beating Marqués de Riscal by 12 to 9. This was a double win for team Dubai (promoted by the Emirates family Albwardy) who also won the Silver Cup.

Sotogrande Gold Cup 2023

Dubai Team won the 2023 Copa de Oro (High Handicap) for the second year in a row. In another thrilling final at Los Pinos, Dubai were crowned winners of the Electrolit Gold Cup after beating MB Polo 9-8.

Puente de Hierro polo fields

The grounds of Puente de Hierro are situated further north of the Guadiaro River and have three playing fields, two of them reserved during the International Summer Tournament for use in medium and low handicap matches. They were inaugurated in 1992 and the new five star stable blocks for 39 horses are located here.

Rio Sotogrande polo fields

The grounds of Río Sotogrande are located on the west side of the Guadiaro River, opposite to the grounds of Los Pinos, and used in the International Summer Tournament and other winter and spring tournaments for high and medium handicaps.

Los Pinos polo fields, Sotogrande

Los Pinos is the principal ground for Sotogrande, offering two unique spectator spaces surrounded by 20 hectares of field and parkland.The high handicap matches of the International Summer Tournament and most of the winter tournaments are played here. The Los Pinos ground has four playing fields and one warm-up field.
