The longish twelfth day of the Coast to Coast footpath leads you on from El Burgo through a wild swathe of the Sierra de las Nieves Natural Park to the hilltop town of Ronda, the largest settlement which you encounter between the two oceans. This is the long straight and wide beach backed by a seafront promenade, cycle path and a quiet urban access road. This beach is never crouded due to its size. La Basilica de Vega del Mar was a Paleo-Christian (early Christian) church and necropolis (burial site), located near the coast just east of the mouth of the Guadalmina river, in San Pedro, Marbella. The area used to known as Vega del Mar, and is now known as Linda Vista.
Located next to the beach in the Guadalmina urbanisation, the baths date back to the 3rd century and were first discovered to be Roman in 1915. The solid mortar structure has survived the passing of history and weather well, particularly considering the location near the beach.

This is the place to start. From the motorway, it’s easy to find your way up the hill to the castle. Simply follow the signs and find parking at the top. There’s a Parador (national hotel) with a full bar and a lovely restaurant, which makes it easy to make a day of it. However, if you bring yourself a picnic, there is a path out around the outside of the castle wall and you may find a place to perch and have your lunch.
