Costa de la Luz (Cadiz)

San Fernando

The town of San Fernando, often referred to as La Isla del Sur (the Island of the South), is not actually an island but a small peninsula, set within the stunning setting of the Bay of Cadiz. Covering an area of some 30 km2, it is connected to Cadiz City by an eight kilometre strip of land and for centuries was connected on the rest of the mainland only by the Zuazo bridge. It is an important Andalucian town, with a population of close to 100,000.

Atlanterra

Atlanterra, in Cadiz province, is an exclusive urbanisation situated 30km north of Tarifa (and within the municipal boundry) but access is by the only road leading south from the small fishing village of Zahara de los Atunes, which is 10km south of Barbate separated by military land and the salt marshes.

Vejer de la Frontera

If you are exploring the N340 Costa de la Luz coast road, you'd be wise to make time for a wander around Vejer. This classic white village on the hilltop is well worth a visit. It is actually 10 kilometers inland, perched high above the steep gorge of the River Barbate.

Vejer de la Frontera Beaches

Just nine kilometres from Vejer de la Frontera the Playa del Palmar beach stretches out across the Cádiz coast inviting visits from locals and tourists alike. Nearby Capes of Trafalgar and Roches protect the coast.

Puerto Real

Much of the municipality forms part of the Natural Park of the Bay of Cadiz. This environmentally protected region is an ornithologist’s delight, being a permanent home to a wide variety of birds including grey herons, cormorants, plovers and ospreys, and the temporary habitat of many more.

Horseriding in Tarifa

Many people dream of riding a horse along the beach, with their hair flying in the wind and the waves crashing around them, feeling a great sense of freedom. Tarifa´s extensive chain of white sandy beaches provides an ideal spot for realizing this dream. Most beaches are several kilometers long, and those which are not immediately connected can be accessed easily via coastal paths, meaning that riders can cover a huge proportion of the coast unrestricted.
