Real Monasterio de la Encarnacion
Iglesia y Convento de las Claras - Church and Convent of Las Claras
This convent is located on one side of Plaza Vieja, opposite the CIP and tourist office. Officially called Real Monasterio de la Encarnacion, it is known locally as Las Claras.
The church dates from the 18th century, with a cross-shaped floor pattern, and a cupola over the transept decorated with plasterwork and coats of arms. You can see the church dome, with windows and topped by a smaller round hub, from the roof terrace of the CIP; you might be even treated to the sight of the nuns' washing hanging up. The main façade of the church, in the plateresque style, is on calle Jovellanos.
The convent was burned in the Civil War, and rebuilt after the war finished, although the church survived. Years ago it used to own more land, but this was sold off to make space for more streets and houses to be built.
