Pampaneira

Pampaneira is one of three popular, picturesque whitewashed villages. Like its neighbours, Bubión and Capileira it hugs the steep slopes of the lush Barranco de Poqueira river gorge. It has a population of around 350.

The small village – with a population of around 300 – centres on its pretty square dominated by a 16th-century Mudéjar church, the Iglesia de Santa Cruz, with a wooden coffered ceiling and a couple of gilded altarpieces dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. The church is flanked by several bars and handicraft shops.

HISTORY

Pampaneira shares the rich historical background of the Alpujarra region of Granada. Its geographical isolation allowed it to develop unique traditions, reaching its peak during the Arab-Andalusian period as an important agricultural and silk-producing centre. More>
